Dominguez' Micah McKinney
Commits to Pepperdine--(April 7, 2000)
We had heard about this one last
night, but didn't have time to post anything this morning (due to work) or this afternoon
and afternoon (Pump tourney), but wanted to share this as soon as we could. Micah
McKinney (6'-2" Sr. PG/SG) from Division II State Champion Compton Dominguez has
given a verbal commitment to Pepperdine University. Micah will pick up right
where fellow Compton Dominguez alum and graduating Pepperdine senior Tommie Prince leaves
off. Micah started out as a pure two guard, but this season really stepped up his
performance at the point with the absence of Keilon Fortune (5'-10" Jr. PG) who for
some reason we were never really able to discover, didn't play this season for the Dons.
Micah was largely responsible for running the point up until the State
Finals in Sacramento, missing that final game only due to an injury to his wrist sustained
in Dominguez' Southern Regional Final contest (i.e., the game at The Forum leading up to
the State Finals).
McKinney should get immediate playing time at
Pepperdine, which is losing a good portion of its backcourt with graduating seniors
Derrick Anderson (6'-5" Sr. G), Tezale Archie (6'-1 Sr. G), Robert Fomby
(6'-1" Sr. G) and Tommie Prince (6'-5" Sr. SG).
McKinney will sign a letter of intent during
the late spring signing period and he will be eligible next year, as he has the core
courses and the required SAT score for freshman eligibility. Pepperdine also has
commitments from Will Kimble (6'-9" Sr. PF) from Pacific in San Bernardino and Robert
Turner (6'-9" Sr. F) from Western HS, and a signed LOI from Kimble's Pacific teammate
Michael Hall (6'-3" Sr. SG), and we'd expect to see these four freshmen getting
significant playing time next year.
