Ayala's Chris Pacana Will
Play For Concordia--(Apr. 24,  2000)

According to the official website of Concordia University, Chris Pacana (6'-0" Sr. PG/SG/SF) has signed to play with Concordia next year.  Concordia is an NAIA Division I school which competes in the Golden State Athletic Conference against such schools as Biola, Azusa Pacific, California Baptist, Pt. Loma Nazarene, Christian Heritage, Hope, Vanguard and Westmont.  Here's the official press release:

Irvine, CA -- Concordia University’s men’s basketball coach Greg Marshall announced the signing of guard Chris Pacana, the 2000 Sierra League’s Most Valuable Player.

“I want to have an immediate impact as a player and try to be a leader at Concordia,” said Pacana. “I have to gain strength in preparation for the college game. Everyone can play at this level and I need to be ready for it.”

Pacana, a 6’0” point guard, starred at Ayala High School averaging 12.6 points and 4.6 assists per game. He was also selected to the all-tournament team at the Buchanan Clovis West Tournament and the Ayala Dog Fight Tourney.

“Chris (Pacana) is a very heady, smart player who will have a great career at Concordia,” said coach Marshall. “We are very pleased to have signed an individual of his caliber.”

Interestingly enough, this past season, Ayala coach Tom Gregory chose to move Chris completely away from the point and played him at the small forward spot, and accordingly, when we issued our lists for the seniors yesterday, we didn't have Chris listed as a point guard.  Still, it's clear that Concordia intends to play Chris at the point, and we think that's probably where he belongs.   One other interesting note: Either we and everyone else have been spelling Chris' last name incorrectly as "Pacana" or the school got it wrong in their press release when they repeatedly said they'd signed "Chris Picana".   On the assumption that we and everyone else we know has been spelling it correctly all along, we've corrected the press release.

Oh, and for those who don't know, Concordia is a four-year Christian university, one of 10 colleges and universities of the nationwide Concordia University System, operated by The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.  The school is located on 70 secluded acres within the community of Irvine, California.
