Signs Jorge Rochin--(Apr. 25, 2000)
How do these guys do it? We're talking about Portland Pilots' head coach Rob Chavez and assistant Jason Levy, a SoCal guy who attended CSUN himself. . . While everyone else was here in SoCal looking at a lot of the hot high school prospects at the Double Pump "Super 40 workout" at Levy's alma mater, at the Rockfish Spring League at LACC, the Dada All-Star Classic, the Orange County All-Star and the rest of the events happening during the last few weeks, these two guys were out beating the bushes and it looks like their stealth work has paid off. The Portland Pilots announced today that they have signed one of the best JUCO players in the country to an LOI: Jorege "Coky" Rochin (6'-7 1/2" So. F), a Mexican national player who attended Mesa Community College in Arizona last year has signed with the Pilots. . Rochin averaged 22.3 points and 14.9 rebounds per game, and shot an amazing 72.6% from the field, a figure which led all JUCO players in the country.
This guy could, together with other recent signees Carmie Olowoyo (who signed last week), and Casey Frandsen, Matt Towsley and Ghislain Serna (who all signed in the fall) help make the University of Portland a real factor in the West Coast Conference race and a potential NCAA tournament team next season.
