Los Alamitos Hires Russ May
As New Boys' Coach--(Apr. 18, 2000)
Both the LA Times and the Orange County Register reported yesterday that Los Alamitos High School had ended the search for a new boys' head basketball coach by hiring Russ May, a former Cerritos College and Mayfair High School assistant. The Long Beach Press Telegram also ran a story today about the hiring of May at Los Al.
May is the third coach for Los Alamitos since Steve Brooks was forced out of the job last fall in the wake of rumors and innuendo about the handling of funds for the basketball program. Brooks was replaced by Richard Smith who coached the team this past season. May was an assistant coach at Cerritos College from 1994 to 1999, and then was an assistant at Mayfair under Dave Breig last season.
"It's something that I've always wanted to do and I'm just very grateful that Los Alamitos gave me a chance to lead this program," May told the Press-Telegram. "The Sunset League is one of the toughest in all of Southern California but that's the way I wanted it. You want to play in a great league and you want to try and make the playoffs every year. I don't think it will be difficult at all to motivate the players every day. It's a great school with a great tradition and I'm proud to be a part of that." May also told Steve Fryer of the Orange County Register, "They have such a great tradition there. It resembles what I liked about being at Cerritos College. There is a family atmosphere that I really enjoy."
