San Diego Super 60
League Update--(Apr. 3, 2000)

What: San Diego Super 60 League
Where: San Diego
When: Tuesdays & Sundays
NCAA Certified League

Our friend Ollie Goulston of the Rising Stars wanted us to let everyone know about the new San Diego Super 60 League. The league is styled somewhat after the Rockfish Spring League, and is designed to give San Diego's best players the opportunity to showcase their talent.  While there are some names notably missing from the rosters of participants, there are more than a few really top-flight players in this league, including guys like Floyd North, Fred Hooks (Division 4 Player of the Year in SD), Donyare Mayfield (Division 1 Player of the Year, Jean Marley-Pierre (Signed with Coppin State), and Tony Gwynn Jr. (who is trying to follow in his dad's footsteps and play both baseball and basketball at SDSU). Top young players include sophs Shamar Shire, Joktan Roberts, Derek Stockalper, and Julius Keeler & frosh Jeremy Cross, Sean Davis, Jake Wohlfeil and Rafik Henderson, among the many others.  We haven't been down to see the league just yet, but we're planning on making a trip down there soon.

The Super 60 League runs Sundays (4:30 - 8:15) & Tuesdays (5:45 - 9:30) at Mid-City Gymnasium in San Diego. This gym is located 2 blocks south of the intersection of 43rd & University. Phone number is (619) 516-3082. We're told that it's an interesting facility in that it is part of a police sub-station, so this must mean that it's an unusually safe spot. There are 3 games per night and they start every 1 hour and 15 minutes. This league is NCAA sanctioned, and is designed for 3 basic reasons: to have fun, to play against the best competition possible, and to gain some exposure. Teams do not practice, and the game rules are designed to help scoring. Man-to-man defense only, 6 personal fouls to disqualify (RSL in contrast has a "no-foul-out" rule), referees do not touch the ball in deadball situations in the backcourt, play (2) 25 minute running halves, and so on. May 7 will feature an all-star game as well as a slam dunk contest, 3-point shooting contest, and then a few weeks later there will be a round of playoffs.

Here's the schedule for the remainder of the season for those interested in attending:
