Weekend Preview: Rockfish, Pump,
Dada, OC All-Stars--(Apr. 12,  2000)

There will be more than a few opportunities to see some of the best players in SoCal get together for big-time games, and since this is a "live" exposure weekend, the college coaches will once again be out in full force.  And given the variety of options again, it's more than likely that players, coaches and fans will once again have to make some choices about where to be since there are certain to be overlaps.  Here's what's up:

1.  Rockfish Spring League Playoffs at LA City College:  We don't have the schedules yet, but the league is winding down to its last weekend.  The rosters are the same as those we've posted previously.    Playoff games will be played between the teams in the league (Orcas, Hammerheads, Swordfish, Belmont Shore, IEBP, Inland, etc).  Saturday will be devoted entirely to playoff games, which will take place during the usual time frame, i.e., from 9:00 a.m. (first tip-off) until approximately 9:00 p.m. (last tip-off).  All games, through and including the semifinals, are scheduled for Saturday.  The Championship finals will take place on Sunday.  Sandwiched between the Championship game will be three different RSL All-Star games.  The first will be the Frosh-Soph game, followed by the Top 24 game, and finally the Top 48 (don't ask us why they will be played in that order; it's what we've been told by Dave Benezra).  We will have the actual game schedules and All-Star rosters shortly.

2.  Double Pump "Top 30" Invitational at CSUN: This event will run Saturday (9- 4) and Sunday (9-12 noon) at Cal State Northridge. This is sort of a cross between a showcase, scrimmage and a workout, and since this is the first occasion for this event, we're not quite sure what to call it.  The Pumps originally conceived of a "workout" weekend which would involve only their three travel teams (Pump N Run All-Stars, Double Pump All-Stars and Double Pump Arizona All-Stars), hence the name "Top 30" Invitational.  The original concept was to invite college coaches in to observe the three teams participate in individual and team workouts and scrimmages throughout the weekend, and while that's still part of the plan (there are a number of colleges who have said they will be in attendance), the event has been expanded beyond simply the three Pump teams, and a number of other top players have been invited and confirmed that they will attend, including many of the top players from schools such as LA Fairfax, Mater Dei, Mayfair, Dominguez,  Westchester, etc.   We don't have an "official" list of participants yet, but given the players we have heard will be playing, this one will feature some really interesting games.

3.  Dada All-Star Classic at Cal State LB Pyramid:   Saturday, 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Long Beach State's Pyramid.  This event will feature just about every top senior in Southern California and several top players from other parts of the country. The event, formerly known as the Eddie Jones Classic, is quickly turning into Southern California's top all-star contest.  There will be a media luncheon on Friday at a very nice restaurant, and we'll be there to interview the participants.  We've already posted the rosters in the Daily Articles, as well as times and ticket info, so if you're interested in reading about this, just check there.

4.  The 35th Annual Orange County Kiwanis All-Star at Orange Coast College: Saturday, April 15. There will be two games, a girl's game at 5:00 p.m. and a boys game which will be played at 8:00 p.m.  We've previously posted the rosters at this link and we'll be posting them again shortly as a reminder.
