Schea Cotton Will Also
Enter NBA Draft--(May 6, 2000)

Cotton.jpg (17499 bytes)Well, it had to happen. . . with everyone making the jump and trying to get into the first round of the NBA draft, this is one player who we anticipated would be making the jump too. . . Associated Press reported this morning (repeating a story that was carried on ESPN yesterday) that sophomore Schea Cotton, who led Alabama in scoring during his only season with the Crimson Tide, will enter the NBA Draft.  Cotton, a 6'-6" guard, told ESPN that he has already signed with agent Steve Kauffman and planned to send a letter yesterday to the NBA declaring his intentions.

Cotton left the Alabama team and withdrew from classes in March. He had said at the time he was concerned about his father, James, who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. "I wanted to be with my family and financially I wanted to help," the Long Beach, Calif., native told the ESPN.com. Cotton said he needs a strong performance at the Chicago pre-draft camp next month to improve his chances of being a first-round pick.

Cotton, who turned 22 in May, averaged 15.5 points and 4.6 rebounds last season. He was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection by the AP.  Cotton played his high school basketball at St. John Bosco in Bellflower and then transferred for his junior year to Mater Dei, but eventually returned to SJB.   Cotton originally signed out of high school with Long Beach State, but then was granted a release from his LOI, and was recruited by UCLA, where he was already enrolled when the ETS voided his SAT scores.  Cotton then enrolled at a prep school, and eventually wound up at Alabama last season.  It was the only season of college basketball he played.
