LA City College Sends Six
Players To D-I Colleges--(May 15, 2000)
Love it or hate it, one thing is for certain, if you measure success by the number of conference titles (7 in the last 7 years) LA City College is consistently among the top JUCO programs in California and the country. And love him or hate him, but LACC head coach Mike Miller is also one very successful head coach, particularly if you measure success by a State title and consider that he's helped send 31 of his players to Division I schools in the last 7 years, a pretty admirable record. And this spring, LACC added another 6 signees to the list of already successful players who have moved on to the D-I level.
We've already reported on some of the players who have signed, but at the risk of repeating ourselves, this is a composite list:
Deon Green (6'-2" So. PG/SG) signed today with Division I Conference USA's South Florida and coach Seth Greenberg. Deon, from LA High was selected first team All Conference this season and last year was the Conference MVP.
Randy Holcomb (6'-8" So. PF), a 220 pound inside guy, just signed today with San Diego State. Randy was 1st Team All-State this past season as well as winning the Conference MVP. He'll have two years to play at San Diego State. Holcomb chose the Aztecs over Providence and Kansas State. Holcomb played a season at Fresno State before transferring to L.A. City and with him and Chris Walton (6'-8" Sr. PF) from USDHS and Aerick Sanders (6'-9" Sr. F) from Gardena Serra, SDSU has an excellent frontcourt.
Jamal Harrison (6'-7" Redshirt Freshman F) has signed with Lousiana State University, and will have three years to play.
Kenya Carruthers (6'-6" Reshirt Freshman PF) has signed with Iona. This 240 lb. power forward will have three yers to play.
Albert Miller (6'-3" So. SG) has signed with UC Irvine. The Westchester HS grad will have two years to play for the Anteaters.
Terek Wright (6'-10 1/2" So. C) has signed with Coppin State where he'll have two more seasons to play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Some will recall that Coppin also signed a number of other players from SoCal this year (three to be exact) and a couple of others from the West Coast, including DeMond Huff (6-10 So. F/C) from San Bernardino, California out of San Bernardino Valley JC, Lamar Ruffin (6'-7" Sr. SG/SF) from Murrieta, California out of Chaparral HS, and Jean Marley-Pierre (6'-7" Sr. PF) from San Diego El Camino HS. Additionally, Coppin head coach Fang Mitchell (what a great name) also received signed LOI's from Alexy Ferreira (6'-3" Sr. G) from Rice HS in New York, Henry Nieves (6'-1" So. G) a transfer from Georgia State, and Donnell Thomas (6'-8" So. F/C) from Durant, Mississippi, who played this past season at San Jose City JC.
