Montana State Signs 2 SoCal JUCO's,
Brad Fields & Kenny Plummer--(May 4, 2000)

We've been hearing about these two signings for the past week or so on some of the other recruiting websites and various word of mouth stuff from various friends in the world of recruiting, but now it's official.  Montana State University as signed two SoCal-based JC players, Brad Fields (6'-6" So. SG/SF) from Porterville JC, and Kenny Plummer (6'-5" So. PF) from Moorpark JC.  These are two excellent signings for MSU.  Here's the official press release on the signings, which has a lot of excellent information about these two guys.

Bobcats Beef Up Frontline

May 2, 00 -- BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Montana State has bolstered its frountcourt by adding a pair of versatile forwards from the California junior college ranks, Bobcat coach Mick Durham announced Tuesday.

Brad Fields of Porterville College and Kenny Plummer of Moorpark College have each signed national letters-of-intent to join the Bobcat men’s basketball program in August. Both will enroll at MSU as juniors. “We’re really excited about adding two quality forwards,” Durham said. “These guys really shore up the areas of rebounding and defense, which we felt were our biggest needs for immediate improvement. They both had great sophomore seasons. Porterville won the state championship and Moorpark lost to Porterville in the semis, so Kenny and Brad are very familiar with each other.”

Fields is a 6-6, 190-lb native of Johnson City, Tenn., who has played everywhere from point guard to power forward. He helped lead Porterville to its first-ever California State Junior College Championship this spring, averaging 10.7 points and leading the team with 3.3 assists and 2.4 steals a game. Fields joins former teammate Jermaine Walton at Montana State. “Brad is an all-around solid player,” Durham said. “He is very unselfish, and he’ll be a great defensive player. He can probably play every position for us except center. He may well have been the best player on Porterville’s team, and that was a good team.”

Porterville coach George Nessman, the California JC Co-Coach of the Year, said Fields can help a team in many ways. “I think you’ll be struck by Brad’s versatility,” he said. “He’s very athletic, he’s a great defender, and with all due respect to Rufus (Nicholson) and Jermaine, Brad may be the most talented player of mine that has gone to Montana State,” Nessman said. “His defense and ability to create are really tremendous. He actually played some point guard for us, he really handles the ball well, and he is a good shooter. Brad is a solid, solid player, very unselfish, and he’ll fit into the program at Montana State very well.”

Plummer, a 6-5, 235-lb power forward from Manhattan in New York City, averaged 14.0 points and 8.6 rebounds a game at Moorpark this year, earning first team all-conference honors and all-tourney kudos in a pair of in-season tournaments. Moorpark coach Remy McCarthy calls Plummer a self-made player. “I have a lot of respect for Kenny Plummer. He’s a tough kid and he works hard. This year we won our first conference championship in 17 years, had the most wins in school history, made it to the state Elite 8 for only the third time, and went the farthest of any team in school history, and I said all season that the guy we could least afford to lose was Kenny. He could go inside and get us a basket, he’s good at that. He takes it at you, he’s quick and smart.”

Durham said Plummer brings a physical presence to the Bobcat frontline. “Kenny Plummer’s best feature is probably his toughness. He really came into his own as a sophomore,” he said. “The first time we saw him was at the (California junior college) state tournament, and we felt from the beginning that he’s the kind of undersized inside player we’ve had a lot of success with here at Montana State.”
