Rising Stars BCI Western
Regional Results--(May 31, 2000)

We received a very detailed report from Ollie Goulston yesterday, and included in it was a wrap-up of the entire weekend and all of the results for pool play and single-elimination play for each of the divisions at the Rising Stars BCI Western Regional Tournament in San Diego.  We're running a bit behind, but better late than never, so here's Ollie's report:

We had quite a long weekend with our tournament, but it went very well. For a first time event, we were surprised and impressed with the terrific competition that we saw. The 11-14 year old divisions were absolutely loaded as some of the best teams in the country competed. The following is the list of 1st - 4th place, and I have attached the full final pool and bracket results for every division.  Each team's overall record is in parenthesis.

First some comments and thank yous, and then the results, so please bear with me.

Wow, what a weekend!!! We are very proud of the first ever, BCI Western Regional tournament and the high level of participation of its teams. True, there were some glitches, but overall the tournament went well, and we look forward to the strides we will make for next year. Referees, as always are a source of irritation and controversy. We did our best in securing high school and college officials through the association. Like every tournament though, you get some good officials and some bad ones. Overall though, we had a solid group of officials. We appreciate Joey Garcia and Neal Wehner's efforts in securing and managing these officials.

I wanted to applaud the efforts of Marlon Wells and Michelle Reiner who did a fantastic job in putting this tournament together. There were a lot of long hours and difficult situations to deal with, but they did a great job. For those of you who do not know Marlon, he is a terrific individual who is devoted to the kids in our program. He took this type of committment and put it into this  tournament. He put his heart into making this tournament a first rate event, and he was definitely successful. In my experience running leagues and tournaments, people are always more vocal with their complaints than with their compliments, but I want to let Marlon know that he did a FANTASTIC JOB and ran a GREAT TOURNAMENT!!! If you enjoyed the tournament, I really encourage you to let Marlon know. It is always nice to hear that your efforts are appreciated.

There are a lot of people that helped make this tournament a success and I wanted to take the time to thank them for their efforts publicly. They were terrific and we couldn't have done it without them. It is hard to list everyone involved, so here is one big thank you and I'd particularly like to thank, Terri Banford, Brad Milhoan, Katrina Washpun, Willie Matson, Marlin Christensen, Terry Reese, Sally Fleishmann, Charlie Fleishmann, Patricia Malone, Angie Wiggins, Gayle Stech, Jackie Wilson, Chantal Walker, Isabelle Soto, and Leslie Coughlan. Hopefully, I haven't overlooked anyone, but if I have, thank you.

Also, our coaches all did a terrific job this weekend both coaching and assisting with the tournament. Marshawn Cherry, Lonnie Jones, Ralph Brice, Eugene Lewis, Carlos Moreno, Zack Jones, Mel Goins, Raphael Durr, Todd Christiansen, Curtis McGlown, and Jonathan Ward, your contributions to our program are invaluable and the time you have sacrificed for our kids is always appreciated.

The following organizations brought many teams and conducted themselves with a great deal of class all tournament: Arizona Stars, 4-D Stars, Tucson Heat, Pasadena Boys & Girls Club, South Coast Stars, SCA, East Bay Bearcats, Spirit of the North, Long Beach Sixers, and Beach Cities. You all do a terrific job with your programs and you should be commended. (Hopefully, I didn't overlook anyone). The single teams also did a terrific job, but there are just too many to list!

Thanks again for every team's participation. We enjoyed watching the great games and both the agony and thrills that occurred. It is great to see all the kids play and we are grateful for the efforts of every parent and coach to give their kids these types of opportunities.

Finally, in reaction to High Five America, and their continual knocks against our program (both privately & publicly), we really don't have much to say. All we care about is making our program the best it can be and satisfying the needs of our kids. We are human, and make mistakes, and yes our teams don't always win. But winning is not why we are in this. Our program is trying to develop young men and women (yes, we only have Candace) to be the best people that they can be (first) and the best basketball players they can be (second). If we win along the way, so be it. Our focus is on our kids though. I strongly suggest that maybe that is where your focus should be!!! As far as we are concerned, having two tournaments during Memorial Weekend in San Diego was a good thing because it meant more kids playing!!! We hope your tournament was a success and we wish High Five the best of luck in the future!!!
