4th Annual adidas-Mats Madness:
LA Rockfish Rosters--(May 28, 2000)
We haven't been able to catch any of the various Rockfish team games, and thus can't ascertain whether the rosters which are printed in the program are in fact the "real" rosters at the tournament, but we've run into most of the teams at one location or another, and have seen most of these guys around the tournament, so we'd say these are pretty accurate.
Rockfish have brought five teams to the tournament, and they are all talented teams. Again, we have no idea of team standings and won't really know how everyone has done overall until tomorrow morning when the board at the tournament headquarters at Sunnyside is updated. In the meantime, rosters alone will have to suffice.
Los Angeles Rockfish:
This is the Rockfish's "No. 1" team, coached by Dave "Rockfish" Benezra, and it has the usual group of suspects but Dave and Mark have moved a couple of players around a bit:
Solomon Brown | 6'-1" Jr. PG | St. Thomas More Prep |
Nick Curtis | 6'-8" Jr. F | Oxnard HS |
Anthony Davis | 6'-5" Jr. SG/SF | Cleveland HS |
Tim Drisdom | 6'-3" So. PG | Downey Calvary Chapel |
Josh Dunaj | 6'-0" Jr. PG/SG | Riverside Poly |
Alex Graham | 7'-0" Jr. C | Redlands |
Jermaine Harper | 6'-3" Jr. SG | Blue Ridge Prep |
Rory O'Neil | 6'-11" Jr. F/C | Ridgecrest Burroughs |
Julian Sensley | 6'-9" Jr. F | St. Thomas More Prep |
Donald Wilson | 6'-3" So. SG | Dorsey |
David Newkirk | 6'-5" Jr. SF | Maranatha |
The Los Angeles Rockfish "Orcas" is the next team listed in the program, and this is the team coached by Mark Berokoff:
Kenny D'Oyen | 5'-9" Jr. PG | Bishop Montgomery |
Drew Gibson | 5'-11" Fr. PG | Dorsey |
Stephen Graybill | 6'-0" So. PG/SG | Dos Pueblos |
David Popoola | 6'-3" Jr. SG | Blue Ridge Prep |
Wes Wardrop | 6'-3" So. SG/PG | Worcester Prep |
Bryant Markson | 6'-6" So. F | Monrovia HS |
Ryan O'Hara | 6'-7" So. F | Monrovia HS |
Nashid Beard | 6'-8" Jr. F | Reseda HS |
Daryl Pegram | 6'-8" Jr. F | AB Miller |
Matt Salinas | 6'-8" So. F | Sonora HS |
Of interest on this roster is the fact that even though the school year is not technically over and Wes Wardrop continues to be enrolled at Loara and is in the junior class, he's been reclassified to reflect that he will be enrolling at a prep school next fall and will once again be a junior in September. We're not quite sure how that works, since the NCAA basically says a player has four years of high school within which to complete the "core" courses, but we'll be the first to admit we don't know a whole lot about the prep school route. . . we may know a lot more than the general public, but this is a case where a little bit of knowledge is probably dangerous. . .
The third team listed in the program from the Rockfish is the Los Angeles Rockfish "Dolphins", coached by Kevin Stapleton:
Jimmy Goffredo | 6'-0" Fr. SG | Crescenta Valley |
James Jenkins | 6'-7" Jr. F | Crescenta Valley |
Gavin Lee | 6'-3" So. G | Bishop Montgomery |
Khalif Ford | 6'-0" Fr. PG | Diamond Bar |
Peter McCaslin | 6'-0" Jr. PG/SG | Chadwick |
John Haywood | 6'-3" So. G | Bishop Amat |
Ryan Moore | 6'-3" Jr. SG | Brea Olinda |
Kevin Gardner | 6'-7" So. F | Peninsula |
David Patten | 6'-8" So. F | El Dorado |
Chris Tarne | 6'-1" So. SG | Crescenta Valley |
The fourth Rockfish group listed in the program is the one coached by Izzi Metz, the Los Angeles Rockfish "Barracudas":
Patrick Haddan | 6'-0" So. PG | Mater Dei |
Mark Holmquist | 5'-8" So. PG | Saugus |
Ellis Walker | 6'-7" Jr. F | Hart |
Chris Tarne | 6'-1" So. SG | Crescenta Valley |
John Liam Stapleton | 6'-2" Fr. SG/SF | Crossroads |
Kyle Kegley | 6'-3" Jr. SG/SF | Thousand Oaks |
J.P. Elliot | 6'-8" Jr. SF/PF | Loyola |
Michael Wilds | 6'-7" Jr. PF | Dorsey |
Derek Jones | 6'-5" Jr. SF | Providence |
Brandon Robinson | 6'-3" Jr. SG/SF | Sylmar |
Damon Jenkins | 6'-3" Jr. SF/SG | Dos Pueblos |
Kevin Stacey | 6'-2" So. SG | Santa Margarita |
Again, we have no idea how the Barracuda team is doing, but if they finish first in their pool (Pool H) according to the brackets we've got, it looks like they're headed for a showdown in the first round of the single elimination with the Pump N Run team.
The Rockfish team listed fifth and last in the program is the Rockfish "Marlins" coached by Hernando Planells, and while we don't know squat about what the other teams have been doing in terms of results, we know that the Marlins are 1-1 at the end of Saturday's competition, having beaten a very good IEBP Players team by a single point (gee and they had to travel all this way to play each other again?), but then they got hammered by the Oakland Soldiers I team. We didn't see the latter game, but we heard it wasn't pretty. Here's the Marlins roster:
Will Sheslow |
6'-0" So. PG |
Montclair Prep |
Kevyn White |
6'-0" Jr. G |
Claremont |
Derrick Williams |
6'-2" Fr. SG/SF |
Campbell Hall |
Anthony Naylor |
6'-3" Prep F |
New Hampton Prep |
Levi Steinmetz |
6'-3" Jr. SF/SG |
Ridgecrest Burroughs |
Tito Hill |
6'-4" Jr. SF/SG |
St. Andrew's HS, Fla. |
Kenny Penn |
6'-5" So. F |
Claremont |
James Shoup |
6'-6" Fr. F |
Murrieta Valley |
Sean Cole |
6'-7" Jr. F |
St. Monica |
Jonathan Todd |
6'-8" So. F |
Chaminade |
We've heard lots of rumors about some transfers for next season involving some of the guys on this Marlins team, among them that Tito Hill will be returning to Florida, and it's more than a rumor, he will indeed be leaving Chaminade, but they may be picking up another guard from this roster. . . we're not saying any more on that subject until it's official because sometimes these things change, and basically, it's really no one's business except the student and his parents. . . again, only time will tell.
We'll have more on these teams tomorrow, including the standings at the end of pool and the results for Sunday in single elimination.
