Belmont Shore East Beats 805
Express In SB Tourney--(June 5, 2000)
We had no idea that the 805 Basketball Program was running a tournament this past weekend up in the Santa Barbara area this past weekend, at least not until we received a note from Dinos Trigonis this morning letting us know that the Belmont Shore "East" team (which consists of players entirely from the Upland HS team), coached by Cornell Teague, beat tournament the host 805 Express team in the Championship game. Apparently the tournament was played at Santa Barbara High School. We have no idea what other teams were present, but we know that the Belmont Shore "East" team was anchored by Upland's Kirk Snyder (6'-6" Jr. SF), Jason Harris (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) and Sheldon Pace (5'-11" Jr. PG)., while the 805 Express team was led by top national junior recruit Dommanic Ingerson (6'-2" Jr. SG), who apparently has recovered from his ankle injury which sidelined him from all but five minutes of the first game at the adida Mats Madness Tournament two weekends ago. 805 also featured another top player, JS Nash (6'-2" Jr. SG) from Rancho Verde HS in Moreno Valley, who the previous week played for the North Riverside Slam N Jam, a team which was eliminated in the "Round of 16" by Clovis West.
In the Third Place game, Belmont Shore South (we know about the "East" team and the "West" team which had mostly guys from the San Fernando Valley, but we've never heard of the No. 1 Belmont team referred to as the "South" team), coached by Montey Lopez and Anthony Diaz outlasted the 805 Express II squad. Standouts for Belmont Shore South were Jamal Walls (6'-6" So. PF) from Crenshaw, Mercedes Lewis (6'-7" So. PF/SF) from Long Beach Poly, Carlos Rivers (5'-11" So. PG) also from Poly, and Robert Hicks (5'-11" Jr. SG/PG) from Lakewood. We're not certain who all played for the 805 II team, but we know Mike Charleston (6'-6" Jr. SG/SF) from Grant HS in Van Nuys was with them in Fresno two weekends ago.
We probably would have attended the event had we known about it in advance, but Dinos promised to send the rest of the tournament details shortly, whenever he and George Albanez (he coaches the 805 teams, and organized the event) can get around to it. Dang, wish we'd seen this one.
