Mats Madness: California BBall Club
Rosters & Results--(June 1, 2000)
We got a chance to see both of the California Basketball Club teams playing in pool play and then saw CABC #1 in the first round of the single elimination bracket. Both teams won their pools advancing to the Gold Division single elimination bracket. Neither team, however, made it beyond tghe first round. CABC #2 strangely wound up forfeiting their first round single-elimination game which was supposed to take place at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday agaisnt Amer-I-Can #1, but the lull gave us a chance to catch up with Rock Johnson, who coaches the Amer-I-Can teams and get some additional info about some of his guys and his program.
These were talented teams with some excellent players, a couple of whom stood out, but we do have one bone to pick with whoever it was that sent the team rosters: We're sure by now that we should just be able to spontaneously list the height and position of every member of this team from memory (in fact we probably can come up with a couple of these guys), but if the coaches don't see fit to take the time to list this info on the official rosters, why should we have to work any harder?. . . If you want to specifically know a player's height from the CABC rosters, just punch the players' name into our "Search SoCalHoops" thingee on the left hand side of the site and you'll undoubtedly find some info on each of these guys. We don't want to sound petty or mean about this, but how difficult would it have been to list a player's height so we wouldn't have to guess or go searching through our old archives? In any event, here are the rosters:

CABC #1 was in pool Pool O, and they played Inner City Hoops (ICH BBall, which is also just known as "BBall", which had some other very talented SoCal guys like Jonathan Harper 6'-5" Jr. SG/SF from Long Beach Poly) in their first game on Saturday morning, winning 76-63. They then beat the Pates (aka Patriots, which is one of the local Fresno HS teams), and then knocked off a depleted 805 #1 team which had none of it's starters except for Adam Allegro (6'-5" Jr. SF) and which was missing James Akinjo and Dommanic Ingerson (6'-2" Jr. SG) from Santa Barbara, who was out in the first game of pool play with a severely sprained ankle. CABC then advanced to the Gold Bracket where the LA Rockfish handed them a loss, ending their tournament. But the game was a lot closer than the final score might have indicated and guys like Lenny Collins, Mike Reich and RJ Socci really pulled CABC along throughout the tournament. We were also impressed with Tashaun Forehan-Kelly, who is the younger brother of Cal's Ryan Forehan-Kelly (he just earned a scholarship at Cal after walking on this year). Tashaun is a bit smaller than his brother but he's still got some time to hit the weights; still he has good moves around the basket, excellent speed and gets to the basket and finishes well.
California Basketball Club II
Here's the roster:
Alex Al-Sabah | Jr. | Woodbridge |
Jacob Collins | Fr. | Capo Valley Christian |
Jed Collins | 8th | Capo Valley Christian |
Matthew Fournier | Fr. | Chadwick |
Jarod Jackson | So. | Esperanza |
Matt King | So | San Clemente |
Adam Roggero | So. | Irvine HS |
Jeff Shafer | Fr. | St. John's Lutheran |
Hayden Socci | So | Santa Margarita |
Again, while we got to see the younger CABC team in pool play (but only sporadically), it was unfortunate that they didn't show for their Gold Division game. . . we never heard the story of why they didn't show but it would have been fun to see them take on the Amer-I-Can #1 team.
