Mats Madness: Alleycats Red & White
Team Rosters & Results--(June 1, 2000)
The Alleycats from San Diego brought two teams to the tournament, and the rosters included some of the best young players from San Diego and surrounding environs.
Alleycats Red:
CJ Brown | 6'-5" Jr. F | Horizon |
Francisco Calles | 5'-11" Jr. G | San Diego |
Jarrha Bolden | 6'-2" Jr. G | Horizon |
Ronald Coleman | 6'-8" Jr. F | Horizon |
Randy Bland | 6'-4" Jr. G | San Diego |
Robert Ortiz | 6'-0" Jr. G | Horizon |
Rashawn Allen | 6'-0" Jr. G | La Jolla Country Day |
The Alleycats Red team found itself in Pool A, with Belmont West, EBO and the SG Bomb Boys, which was decent placement for them, and they proceeded to come out strong, beating a depleted Belmont West team with only 6 players 72-47 in the first game, and then beating the SG Bomb Boys 54-50 in a very close second round pool game that could have gone either way. The Alleycats Red then got to play EBO on Sunday morning, and while they played well, they didn't have enough offensive power against EBO's Antonio Lawrence, Jamaal Williams and little Duane Williams, a 7th grader who was making his tournament debut and who played fearlessly against some of the older guys out there. As an aside, Duane's father has been telling us about his son for several years now, and this was the first chance we got to see him, and he has all the makings of an excellent player. In any event, the Alleycats finished second in pool play, and then moved on to the Silver Bracket, where they beat Next Level #2, a team from NorCal with mostly sophomores coached by Hassan Houston. The second round, Elite Eight in the Silver Bracket had Alleycats Red matched up against the Oakland Soldiers #2, and that was the same team which eventually won the Silver Championship, and thus it was the Alleycats' last game, one we didn't see because it was at the same time as the rest of the second round games in the Gold Bracket, which was at Sunnyside, a considerable distance from Washington Union.
Alleycats White
The Alleycats White team appeared to be the "younger" of the two teams, feature more sophs and freshmen, but that didn't matter as they also had the distinction of being eliminated by the Oakland Soldiers #2 in the Silver Bracket, just one round before the Red team was beaten. Fortunately, Dennis Magro changed the bracketing in the Silver tournament, because the way things were planned, the Alleycats Red were set to play the Alleycats White, and no one wanted to see that happen. . . In any event, this team also finished second in pool play, beating the Washington Union Panthers 63-54, the Oakland Hotshots 66-63, but losing to Amer-I-Can #2 by the score of 95-80. They had some great point guard play from guys like Rommell Marentez who is one of the speedier point guards around, and this was the second time we got a chance to see him and he's got a chance to be really good in the next two years.
