Carson Summer Finale Starts Today
At Carson & Verbum Dei--(June 27, 2000)
What: | Slam N Jam Carson "Summer Finale" |
Where: | Carson HS & Verbum Dei |
When: | June 27-30, 2000 |
Who: | 24 Top So-Cal HS Teams |
There's been a slight change of location for the tournament, and rather than having games scheduled at Carson & Victoria Park, the Victoria games have been relocated to Verbum Dei. We've previously posted the schedule, but the revised schedule with the new change of location is below.
The Long Beach Press Telegram also featured a short blurb about the tournament and some of the local teams participating in it. Here's what the P-T said:
Prep basketball: 24-team summer tourney includes Dominguez.
Dominguez High, which won the mythical national championship last season, is the top seed at the Carson summer high school boys basketball tournament begining today at Verbum Dei and Carson high schools.
The Dons, led by 7-foot center Tyson Chandler, arguably the nation's best prep player, are scheduled to open the 24-team, four-day tournament tonight against Narbonne at 7:30 at Carson High.
The deep tournament includes Westchester, with 7-foot senior Chad Bell; Fremont, with California Freshman of the Year Mark Bradford; Inglewood, with a pair of 6-9 post players in junior D'Angelo Collins and Pasadena transfer Doug Thomas, and Bishop Montgomery, with two of the nation's top guards in twins Errick and Derrick Craven.
Other area teams scheduled to compete include Artesia, Carson, Centennial, Compton and Jordan.
There are at least seven games scheduled today through Thursday at both sites with the final round Friday at Carson. The championship is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m.
Chandler, who led the Dons to Southern Section, Southern California Regional and State championships, has plenty of support in 6-5 Darius Sanders and 6-6 Bobby Jones.
This is the first in a series of area summer tournaments to include Los Alamitos (July 7-8), Best of the Summer at Cal State Dominugez Hills (July 10-24) and Slam N Jam Invitational at Long Beach State (July 20-25).
The tournament format is the usual: pool play for the first three days, then two days of single elimination with a couple of consolation games thrown in on the last day. The Championship round of playoffs will take place on Friday, June 30, and the way this thing sets up, Dominguez and Westchester are the top two seeded teams, and if they win their pools, ultimately they won't play again until Friday afternoon at 1:45 and 3:00 p.m in what will be the second round of semifinals (the rest of the first place teams in the other pools aren't so lucky, and the winners of Pools 1 and 2 will have to play games on Thursday afternoon just to get into the semis). The Championship game will take place June 30, Friday night at 8:00 p.m. at Carson HS.
