LA Watts Summer Games:  Boys' Quarterfinals,
Semis & Final Schedule--(June 21, 2000)

We finally managed to track down some of the missing results from the LA Watts' Summer Games for the boys, in addition to some results from a few more boys' games we didn't see this past weekend.  We were at Fairfax on Sunday and saw two great games involving Oxnard and Fairfax, and both times Fairfax won, although the second one, the venue final,  was a squeaker which really could have gone either way.   Fairfax was led by Evan Burns (6'-8" Jr. SF/PF) who is clearly going to be one of the national-elite players in this class.  We didn't keep a complete scoring count, but Evan had at least 25 points in that final game, including four thunderous tomahawk slam dunks which were just amazing.  We also like the way that Alex Bausley (6'-8" So. PF) is showing continued improvement, and he is developing some nice post moves.  Craig Smith (6'-8" Sr. PF) wasn't in attendance, and was at the 2000 USA Basketball Development Festival in Coloado Springs, playing for the West Team, but Fairfax will clearly be one of the dominant City Section teams again, along with Westchester.

The LA Times' "Our Times" Westside edition also printed some results for other games we didn't get a chance to see.  At Bell High, the Roadrunners were apparently impressive in their Saturday wins over Bell, 55-35, and Narbonne, 55-40,  and they took the venue final with back-to-back wins Sunday over Compton Centennial 47-45 and 30-26.  According to the Times, "The games provide a pivotal showcase for Crossroads' heralded big man, 6-foot-9 rising senior Isaiah Fox. They are giving last year's role players--like rising senior Anthony Locke and rising junior Jordan Rush--a chance to develop into stars."  Other Westside teams which played well were Venice, which won the opener against Reseda, 46-29, but then lost in the second round to Oxnard, 57-49.  Dave Goosen's team then beat Reseda again in the losers' half of the bracket but then lost to Esperanza on Sunday.  Esperanza then went on to play Oxnard after Oxnard's loss to Fairfax.  Oxnard beat Esperanza fairly easily, by about 20 points, earning the right to play Fairfax again for the venue title.

At Carson HS, Santa Monica played West Torrance, 40-36, in the first round but lost to Carson, 68-44, in the second. West Torrance knocked the Vikings out with a 48-36 win in the rematch.

In any event, the quarterfinalists are now set, and there will only be four games this coming Saturday, June 24,  at Dorsey HS so there won't be any conflict with the Orange County Roundball Extravaganza which will be played later that day at Santa Margarita High school.  The semifinals and finals will be Sunday morning at LA Southwest College and the final will be held at 2:30 p.m. at LA Southwest.

See you there.
