Who: 24 Top SoCal HS Teams
Ah, if it's June it must be time for a little desert heat. . . . We just received the announcement for this annual summer event from Cathedral City coach Rob Hanmer, who stages some of the best and most competitive summer (and winter) tournaments around, and looking at the list of schools and the brackets, this will be a pretty good tournament with some excellent local teams, including a couple of schools we're really looking forward to seeing, like Ocean View, with Marques Crane (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF) and Torin Beeler (6'-6" Jr. SG/SF), Chaminade from West Hills, with Scott Borchart (6'-9" Jr. PF), host Cathedral City with Thomas Shewmake (6'-9" So. PF) and Gerald DeVance (5'-10" Jr. PG), and a few others like Victor Valley, Ayala and the new ML King HS from Riverside, just to mention a couple that really pique our interest. Here's the list of pool assignments for the tournament, followed by the schedule for each day of the event:
Pool A Ayala |
Pool B Banning |
Pool C Beaumont |
Pool D Bishop
Diego |
Pool E Canyon
(Valencia) |
Pool F Burbank |
Pool G Anaheim |
Pool H Ocean
View |
Essentially, the way the tournament will work is each team will play each other team in pool play; the winners will go into the Championship Bracket, an 8 team double-elimination bracket with the first round game in the bracket determining whether a team advances to the winner's side of the bracket, or the consolation. Each second place and third place team will advance out of pool play to a similar 8 team bracket, which for the sake of simplicity we'll call the "Silver" and "Bronze" brackets.
The Pool Play schedules look like this:

We'd post up the brackets, but until the teams are actually known, it won't really make much sense. Just know that the "Gold" or Championship bracket games will all be in the Cathedral City main gym, the second place bracket (Silver) games will be in the Cathedral City Auxiliary gym, and the third place bracket games (Bronze) will be played at Palm Desert HS. Starting on Saturday, June 17, games will run at 9:00 a.m. until the last tip-off at 4:00 p.m. (the tournament won't go into Saturday evening, so the kids will get the night off to relax, hit the pools, malls or the movies), and then each bracket will resume play on Sunday morning with the consolation third place games in each bracket at 9:00 a.m., the consolation championship at 10:00 a.m., the third place game at 11:00 a.m. and the Championship games all at 12:00 noon in each bracket.
In the meantime, we'll try to pry loose whatever rosters and other specific information we can about who will be playing for each team, and any other info (like transfers, new players, etc). . . .See you there.
