Beverly Hills Hires Hollywood's
Sanders
As New Boys' Varsity Coach--(June 22, 2000)
This must be the day for announcing hirings at the high school coaching level. We received an e-mail this morning from Steve Herbert, who wrote to tell us that Beverly Hills High School has named Hollywood High School coach Jason Sanders as the new Beverly Hills High School's boys' varsity basketball coach pending school board approval (which is expected this coming Tuesday), and that assistant coach John Braddell has been named as the new head girls' basketball coach, succeeding Regina Kloes.
According to the information Herbert sent us, Sanders is expected to begin working at Beverly Hills next Wednesday after the hiring is approved. Sanders was chosen from a field of 19 applicants which BH Athletic Director Carter Paysinger described as "extremely strong." Three applicants had previous high school head coaching experience.
Paysinger and two others interviewed 12 applicants. According to Herbert, Paysinger told him, "All of the people we interviewed were very good with Xs and Os and the mechanics of playing the game. Jason Sanders was more of what we looking for in the overall picture. He's a [physical education] teacher, knowledgeable about the game, very successful when he played the game [at Westchester High School, San Diego State and Azusa Pacific University], came highly recommended to us and did a very good job at Hollywood High School over the last two years."
Sanders, whom Herbert couldn't reach for comment, will also serve as an assistant track coach and teach physical education. The Normans failed to qualify for the Southern Section playoffs the past three seasons and are coming off a 6-19 season overall, 2-12 in Ocean League play. "High school basketball is like high school football now, a year-round deal," Paysinger told Herbert. "Jason is used to doing that and understands that. I'm a big believer you build programs in the off-season and I think he's capable of building this program. He's got the energy to do that and he's on the cutting edge. The new blood in the program is going to be exciting for everybody."
Sanders will replace Jason Newman, head coach for the past three seasons, who resigned. Newman will remain at the school as a PE teacher and boys' golf coach, and is also expected to become coach of the new girls' golf team.
