SCIBCA "Summer Tip-Off 2000"
Tournament This Weekend--(June 8, 2000)

Imagine a 91 team tournament, with 6 different divisions, all taking place over the course of three days, held at 14 different gyms, and featuring most of the top teams in the Southern Section, without regard to division.  That tournament would be the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association's Boys' Basketball Summer Tip-Off 2000, and for an inaugural tournament, this one is a monster of a tournament.   The list of top teams is actually overwhelming, and includes teams such as Mayfair, Upland, Long Beach Jordan, Redondo Union, Pacifica, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Chaminade, Muir, Mater Dei, Ocean View, Santa Margarita, Cathedral City, Corona Centennial, Glendora, Ayala, San Bernardino, Morningside, and many others.

The tournament will actually be run over three days, starting Friday afternoon, June 9, and from what we can ascertain looking at the various brackets, it's sort of arranged along regional lines, with schools from one region matched against nearby schools for the first round, and then each region's "champion" meeting on Sunday for a series of semifinals, which will culminate with a game for the overall SCIBCA Championship taking place on Sunday, June 11.

We were sent a series of brackets and schedules by Redondo Union Head Coach Jim Nielsen, who has worked pretty hard with the rest of the SCIBCA board, including especially this year's SCIBCA President Ray Lokar, the Head Coach at Western Christian HS, to put this event together, and if it turns out even half as well as it looks it will have been a weekend well spent.

The tournament is divided into two different "Divisions", a Blue Division (which itself is divided into four different divisions, East, West, South, and North), and a Gold Division (which is divided into two separate divisions, East/West and North/South).  The Gold Division appears to be made up of smaller-enrollment schools, and it also looks like they'll be playing in for their own separate championship which will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at Redondo Union HS.  Each subdivision in the Blue Division, i.e., East, West, North and South will compete for the Blue Division Championship; the semis between the North and South will be at 12:00 noon at Redondo, while the East v. West semi will be at 1:00 p.m..  That will be followed by the Gold Championship game at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Redondo Union in which the " Gold East/West Champion" will play the "Gold North/South Champion".  While we didn't get a schedule which showed the Championship game, we're guessing that it will be at 3:00 p.m. at Redondo Union, where the winner of the two Blue Division semis will meet.  Whether there's any game between the Gold and Blue champs is just not shown by the schedules we got, but if so, we'll be certain to let everyone know. The tournament is "double elimination" which means that each team is guaranteed at least two games;  those who lose their first game immediately drop into the left side of the bracket, and for those teams on that side of the bracket, that will be their last game of the tournament; teams that win the first game, will continue on until they lose again.  We'll also be posting a composite schedule of first round games, so you can make up your mind of where you want to be on Friday if you're going to be there to scout these teams, or just to watch for fun.
