Majerus "Big Man" Camp:
Cody Pearson Update--(June 26, 2000)
The word out of Rick Majerus' Utah "Big Man" Camp from our sources who were there was that it was an excellent collection of talent. Of course the camp featured more than just big men, and a number of top guards and wings were also in attendance, since you always need some other guys to feed the big men the ball, right?. One of those guards who attended after receiving a personal invitation from Majerus was Sherman Oaks Notre Dame's Cody Pearson (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF), who very much impressed the coaches, especially Majerus. The word we've gotten, is that Pearson, who has already been offered by Long Beach State's Wayne Morgan, is that Utah is seriously considering an offer (they have not made one yet) and the Ute coaches will be following Pearson intently at the Big Time Tournament and at ABCD, and may offer if he continues to show the same intensity and consistency of play that he has throughout the spring and early summer. Pearson will be playing with Belmont Shore at the Big Time, and either at the Double Pump Best of Summer and/or the Slam N Jam NIT at Long Beach State.
There were several other young prospects from SoCal, including several members of some of the Double Pump teams also in attendance at the Utah camp, and we'll get some details on how they performed shortly. We did hear about another young prospect, a rising junior who also impressed some of the coaches: Tony Melum (6'-6" Jr. SF/PF) from Newport Harbor HS, who is a strong inside player with a good drop step, can step out and shoot to three, received some notice for his strong play. We'll have more word on some of the other local SoCal guys who attended Majerus' camp shortly.
