First Annual Vaquero Summer Tip-Off
Classic Coming July 6-9--(June 14, 2000)
Glendale College will be hosting a boys' varsity high school tournament in a couple of weeks, and it looks like it will be a fairly competitive tournament, with some of the better teams from the Valley, Compton and the Glendale-Pasadena-San Gabriel areas. This one is called the "Glendale College First Annual Vaquero Summer Tip-Off" and it will be held at Glendale College, which is located just off the 2 Fwy at the Mountain Ave. offramp in Glendale, from July 6-9 (Thursday through Sunday). The games will begin at 10:45 am and will continue every hour and 10 minutes thereafter, and will follow a pretty typical format, i.e., a three game guarantee, with the first game determining whether a team drops into an 8 team winner's bracket or an 8 team loser's (aka consolation) bracket. Here's a list of the teams entered:
Sylmar Compton Centennial Notre Dame Taft Grant Alhambra Harvard-Westlake Alemany |
Granada Hills Monroe Kennedy Chatsworth Glendale Hoover Burbank LA Poly |
While this looks to be a pretty good tournament, given the timing, which is right during ABCD and Nike Camp, you won't see some of the top players like Cody Pearson (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) who will be at ABCD, or some of the other top guys who will be at the Double Pump West Coast All-Star Camp which is also at the same time (West Coast All-Stars' first session is from July 7-10). This will still be a chance to see some of these teams who, like Harvard-Westlake, Chatsworth, Grant and others, who will be in a rebuilding mode. The tournament is being run by Glenn Messick, an assistant coach at Glendale College, and if you have any questions about the event, feel free to contact him at (818) 389-3467 for further information. Glenn promises that we'll have a complete schedule and brackets before the event, and if he sends them we'll post them here.
See you there.
