The Daily News had some stuff about the tournament, most of which we've been hearing from our friends at the tournament as well. Apparently Chatsworth and Monroe are the biggest surprises yet, with both of them making it to the Gold Bracket. We caught some of the Monroe v. Inglewood game last night at Taft, and other than a lull in the game during which the coaches and refs were almost coming to blows, it was a tight contest the entire way with Monroe hangining until the end. Inglewood has an amazing roster right now, and it looks like it's going to get even better. Pat Roy has Doug Thomas with him now from Pasadena, De Angelo Collins is back from the detention facility where he served some time for the fight incident while he was at Tustin, Jason McKinney has transferred from Westchester, and yesterday Inglewood also reunited DeAngelo with his SCA teammate and road-buddy, Jamaal Walls (6'-7" Jr. PF) who looks to be transferring from Crenshaw where he didn't play this past season due to ineligibility problems. That's quite a collection of talent, when you consider that Inglewood was already one of the better teams in the region without all of those guys. Look for most of them to be playing with the Paladins travel team in Vegas this summer as well.
Jack Pollon, who is helping Dennis Magro and Sylmar Coach Bort Escoto run the tournament, is also writing some tidbits on the tournament for the Daily News, and had some notes on local teams participating, including Taft and Sylmar:
"Ten of the 16 teams that advanced to the Gold Championship are local [to the San Fernando Valley area]. One of the biggest surprises was Taft, which sneaked into the winner's side when Poly of Sun Valley lost to Marshall of Pasadena 46-44. Even though Taft finished 1-2 in pool play and lost to Poly 56-53, the Toreadores advanced on a tie-breaker. However Taft faces an uphill battle as it takes on Clovis West at 11:00 a.m. today."
What Jack didn't note is that Steve Smith is out for approximately 10 days with an injury to his arm sustained in an earlier game, so it truly will be an uphill battle since Taft will not have their best player in uniform, and Clovis West will, in addition to the rest of the talented players, have Chris Hernandez (6'-2" Sr. PG) who just committed to Stanford, and Charlie Rodriguez (6'-7" Jr. PF).
Other news: According to everything we've heard, Scott Borchart (6'-8" Sr. PF) injured his finger and will be out of action for a while, and he didn't play in Chaminade's loss yesterday in the first round of bracket play to Simi Valley. Scott was invited to ABCD Camp and is still expected to make the trip according to several sources with whom we spoke yesterday. Chaminade also has three new freshmen players, any one of whom can be expected to start for the Eagles this season, along with an number of returning players. Chaminade's most outstanding performer at the tournament, from all accounts, has been Jeff Hufford a solid shooter with a good handle, excellent size and athleticism, and a good defender.
We'll have more later.
See you there.
