In the Championship Final of the Gold Bracket, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, which advanced through pool play beating Daniel Murphy, El Camino Real, and Dorsey, and then marched through bracket play beating Newbury Park, LA Fremont, and then picked up a forfeit win over Inglewood (which showed up for the semifinal game about 40 minutes late), almost beat Clovis West in the Championship Final game, losing 70-73 at the buzzer.
Notre Dame was led by Cody Pearson (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) who scored 29 points, and Mike Luderer (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) who scored 25. Pearson also had 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Ruben Sanchez (6'-0" Sr. PG) was the other big contributor for Notre Dame. Playing the entire game before fouling out with just 8 seconds remaining in the game and the score at 70-71, Sanchez scored 7 points and had 8 assists. Pearson and Luderer were named to the All-Tournament team.
With under 20 seconds to play and Notre Dame down three, the Knights hit a big basket to pull within one, as Ruben Sanchez drove into the lane and scored. Despite efforts by Notre Dame's coach, Rob DiMuro to get the officials' attention (this was a three man crew) to signalling for a timeout, the clock continued to run as Clovis West's Chris Hernandez (6'-2" Sr. PG) dribbled downcourt slowly, forcing Notre Dame to foul. It was Ruben Sanchez' fifth personal, and while it stopped the clock at 8 seconds, it also sent Hernandez, who has committed to Stanford to the line, where he calmly sank two free throws, upping the lead again to three points. And while Notre Dame was able to get the ball into the frontcourt as Pearson dribbled through Clovis' intentionally weak press (they did not want to commit a foul), Pearson's intended target, Mike Luderer was effectively doubled, and with just one second on the clock, Pearson attempted a three which bounced off the rim as the clock ran out.
Clovis West was, as usual, led by tournament MVP Chris Hernandez (6'-2" Sr. PG) who in addition to his committment to Stanford, also recently returned from the 2000 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival where he played for the Silver Medalist West Team. Hernandez hit several key shots, including the two key free throws to put the game out of reach with 8 seconds remaining. Charlie Rodriguez (6'-8" Jr. PF) was also huge in the in this game and despite being doubled every time he stepped into the paint, was very effective with his specialty shot, the post-up turn-around drop step from the left side block. Jason Wallberg (5'-10" Sr. SG), and Nick Debban (6'-3" Jr. SG/SF) also came up big for Clovis West, which finished last season as the CIF Central Section's Division I Champion and the CIF State Southern Regional Champ as well. Clovis West lost in the State Championship D-I Final game to Concord De La Salle by one point. In the War on the Floor, CW had advanced in the semifinals by beating a very strong Upland team, 84-71. Both Hernandez and Rodriguez were All-Tournament selections.
In the Silver Bracket Championship game which preceded the Gold Game, Oxnard led by talented Nick Curtis (6'-7" Sr. PF) easily beat an undermanned Hart HS team, 91-50. In the Silver semifinals, Canyon (Canyon Country) lost to Oxnard 63-54, while Hart beat Santa Clara 67-51.
