The quarterfinals are now set for tomorrow night at Taft HS in the Gold Championship bracket, and it will be Clovis West v. Upland at 4:00 p.m. followed by Notre Dame v. Inglewood at 5:45 p.m. Those two games will be followed by the Silver bracket championship game (the Silver quarterfinals are at 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. at Taft). The Gold Championship game is at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow night, and that's going to be a game you won't want to miss.
But first, a little backtracking. . . . Teams which finished first and second in pool play were automatically placed into 16-team the Gold Bracket to compete for the overall tournament championship. Those teams were Clovis West, Taft, Chaminade, Simi Valley, Dorsey, Sylmar, Chatsworth, Upland, Fremont, Grant, Notre Dame, Newbury Park, Canoga Park, Hoover, Monroe, and Inglewood. Half of the first round games were played Monday, and thus four teams were eliminated while another four were slotted in for the quarterfinals which were played tonight at Taft High School.
The results from Monday's half of the first round games were as follows:
Simi Valley 53 | Chaminade 51 |
Fresno Hoover 62 | Canoga Park 59 |
Fremont 65 | Grant 55 |
Inglewood 73 | Monroe 65 |
Thus, Simi Valley, Hoover, Fremont and Inglewood advanced to the quarterfinals, which were played tonight
The rest of the first round games were played in today at Taft starting at 11:00 a.m. and continuing until about 3:30 p.m. Here's what happened:
11:00 a.m. | Clovis West 90 | Taft 54 |
12:15 p.m. | Notre Dame 75 | Newbury Park 60 |
1:30 p.m. | Dorsey 64 | Sylmar 65 |
2:45 p.m. | Chatsworth 49 | Upland 72 |
The Clovis West game against Taft was really not very pretty, and Taft was forced to play without their best player, Steve Smith, who was out with an injury, and rumor has it that if the injury persists it might also affect his football start at least in the early part of the season. In the 12:15 p.m. game, Cody Pearson was dominant, but the real hero of the game was Mike Luderer, who scored about 30 of Notre Dame's 50+ points through the first three quarters, mostly on outside shots but some nice drives as well. Don't know much about the Dorsey game but it was clear the loss to Dominguez in the Watts Sumer Games took a lot out of the team, while Sylmar played great. And for Chatsworth, the party finally came to an end as they met up with reality in the form of Upland, who many figure will still be standing tomorrow for the finals.
The completion of the Round of 16 set up the following quaterfinal contests tonight at Taft, which had the following results:
4:00 p.m. | Fremont 65 | Notre Dame 70 |
5:15 p.m. | Fresno Hoover 65 | Inglewood 99 |
6:30 p.m. | Clovis West 76 | Simi Valley 64 |
7:45 p.m. | Sylmar 47 | Upland 65 |
Fremont v. Notre Dame: Even with Anthony Davis, Mark Bradford and Kenton Paulino, Notre Dame's Cody Pearson still managed to dominate, with much help from Mike Luderer, David Hungerford, Ruben Sanchez, and others. Cody made something like 10 of 11 free throws in the last two minutes of the game, and like last season's dominant Mission League player, Russell Lakey, Cody has seemed to learn that part of taking over the game means getting to the rack and either scoring or getting fouled and going to line to win it.
Fresno Hoover v. Inglewood: Fresno had no height to match the trees of Inglewood, with DeAngelo Collins looking very good, Doug Thomas, and Jamaal Walls towering above the Hoover guys, it really was not much of a contest, and the result was never in doubt. It is also being rumored that Inglewood may also pick up Andre Patterson (6'-8" Sr. PF) a recent intended transfer to LA Washington Prep. If that happens, Inglewood is certainly a top 10 national power. . . .again. Look for them in the finals with Upland. . . just a prediction.
Clovis West v. Simi Valley: Simi was in this one the whole way, and trailed by only 3 points with about 1:20 to play but then Clovis' Chris Hernandez does what he does best, and he too got fouled repeatedly, went to the line and made all of his free throws and within another minute, it was a 9 point game. Clovis will meet
Upland v. Sylmar: An ugly, ugly game. Sylmar was really only in this one for about the first 10 minutes, and while they managed to keep the score within about 10 or 12 throughout, by the half, Upland was in total command, and the second half was all Upland. Kirk Snyder and Tye Juan Hatter played especially well.
