Where: | Canoga Park HS & Taft HS | ||
When: | June 24-28, 2000 | ||
Who: | 32 Top So-Cal HS Teams |
The semifinals are now set for this bracket:
1:30 p.m. @ Taft HS: Hart v. Santa Clara
2:45 p.m. @ Taft HS: Canyon (CC) v. Oxnard
The Silver Championship is at 6:30 p.m. at Taft, and it will be followed by the Gold Championship game at 7:45 p.m. which will feature either Notre Dame or Inglewood v. Clovis West or Upland.
But a little bit about how we got here: While things were humming along in the Gold bracket, they were sort of bumping, grinding and churning their way along in the Silver bracket, and as is sometimes to be expected, teams suddenly couldn't miss their summer league contests, or just had to be elsewhere. . . . and there were at least three forfeit games between yesterday and today. Everyone managed to get a game in, but it wasn't always against the opponent they were supposed to be playing. As in the Gold bracket, the Silver Bracket teams were also selected based on the results of pool play, with third place and fourth place teams slotted into this bracket. Admittedly, a lot of the teams playing in this bracket weren't as motivated as they might have been to be in the Gold bracket, but what the heck, there are still games to play and sometimes a team will finish 3rd or 4th and still go on to win a lower tournament bracket. . . . remember, the idea is to keep playing, not just to win some title. . . .
In any event, the first round of the Silver Bracket play began yesterday (Monday) afternoon and evening, with the following games:
Burbank 2, Venice 0 (forfeit). . . What a way to start. There was a game played, but it didn't count, as El Camino Real filled in for Venice which "couldn't be there" and in reality this was a forfeit, and Burbank advanced to the quarterfinal round this afternoon against Canyon.
Canyon 40, El Camino Real 56. . . ECR lost it's own game immediately following the game they filled in for Venice. Canyon advanced to meet Burbank this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals..
Alemany 76, Montclair Prep 73. . . Alemany beat Montclair in OT, and it's clear the Mounties have a lot of work to do after losing all of those players. Alemany advanced to play Oxnard this evening.
Oxnard 61, Marshall 40. . . Oxnard is heavily favored to win the Silver bracket, and they advanced to the quarterfinal round by beating up on Marshall which is going to have to rebuild after losing DeVerion Mackey and Jason Sanford to graduation.
In today's quartefinal games the following occurred:
11:00 a.m. | Santa Monica 59 | Valley-Calabasas 54 |
12:15 p.m. | Reseda 50 | Hart 58 |
1:30 p.m. | Daniel Murphy 58 | Santa Clara 62 |
2:15 p.m. | Pasadena 84 | LA Poly 55 |
Those wins and losses set up the late afternoon and evening quarterfinals today at Canoga Park HS. Here's what happened:
4:00 p.m. | Burbank 76 | Canyon 78 (2OT) |
5:15 p.m. | Alemany 49 | Oxnard 81 |
6:30 p.m. | Valley-Calabasas 70 | Hart 76 |
7:45 p.m. | Santa Clara 2 | Pasadena 0 (forfeit) |
