adidas Las Vegas Big Time 2000: Atlanta Celtics
Beat NY Ravens To Win Big Time--(July 19, 2000)

bigtime.gif (3695 bytes)The Atlanta Celtics, behind the play of Greg Tinch, Jonathan Hargrett and Sani Ibrahim defeated the New York Ravens, a very talented team which we saw in one of the first round games of single elimination against the LA Paladins.  Fortunately for the competition at the upcoming Best of Summer which gets started tomorrow morning at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Ravens won't be there.  But unfortunately (or, if you're a fan or a scout, then it's pretty good luck for you), the Celtics will be in town and amazingly, if the pools were truly seedings for the single elimination, some of the top teams are located at opposite ends, with the Celtics in the last pool, FF, and the Michigan Mustangs situated in Pool A.

The official Big Time site hasn't yet posted the details of the game, but they should have the box score up shortly.   The game was apparently close all the way, as the Celtics won by a single point 77-76. Jonathan Hargrett (5'-10" Sr. PG/SG) from Sandston was named the MVP of the championship game, and he scored 21 points in the final.  The Celtic's Michael Ford (6'-1" Jr. SG) from Northeast HS in Macon, Georgia, added 16 points, while Sani Ibrahim (6'-9" Jr. PF) from Atlanta (W.D. Mohammed HS) pulled down 19 rebounds.

Clark Francis at The HoopScoop had this to say about the Celtics:

"The Atlanta Celtics now appear to be well on their way towards becoming the Team of the Summer after their impressive performance in the adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas, NV.  They beat the New York Ravens, 70-65, to take home their second title in a major tournament this summer.  The first was the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in Chapel Hill, NC on Memorial Day Weekend.  Once again 6'6 Julius Hodge from Bronx (St. Raymond's) NY had a big game with 30 points.  He was complemented by 6'4 Chris McRae from Bronx (St. Raymond's) NY with 29 points.  The leading scorer for the winning Atlanta Celtics was 6'0 Johnathan Hargett from Durham (Emmanuel) NC with 21 points."

Even though we couldn't be there for the finals, we'll have much more on the rest of the Big Time shortly. But for now, if you're in Pool FF at the Best of Summer, specifically on the Ft. Worth Lions #2, West Valley Peninsula, or 2 The Hoop, be afraid. . . be very afraid, because this is one really hot team.
