"Open Pool 56" Team By Team Schedules--(July 3, 2000)

Through some methodology we don't quite understand, there are 56 teams that have

been "seeded" to automatically advance to the "Open Division" for single elimination play.  The teams are in Pools A through O (14 pools of four teams each).  Since these teams are "seeded" in advance, this means it really doesn't matter how they finish in pool play.  A team can lose three straight, and still have a chance to win the "Open Division" Championship. . . well, maybe not much of a chance if they drop three straight, but it could happen. . . . the only thing which will be affected by a team's order of finish in pool play among the teams in these brackets will be which first place team from another   "non-open" pool (the other 64 pools who are not guaranteed to enter the Open Tournament) they'll meet.  Only first place teams from the other 64 pools will enter Open Division play.  Second, third and fourth place teams from the other 64 brackets will compete in three separate 64-team single elimination tournaments in the A, B, and C Divisions, respectively.

In any event, the teams in Pools A through O are likely to be among the most competitive in the tournament and presumably that's why they've been placed in these "seeded" pools for pool play.

We've completed filling out the the schedules for the first two days of pool play for those first 56 teams who automatically qualify for the "Open Division"   We've also tied these schedules to the alphabetical listing of teams on either side of the text you're now reading:  Just click on a name of a team, and you'll go directly to that team's pool play schedule (NOTE: the team's schedule will be displayed right at uppermost top edge of the screen, so look there first).

While this is certainly the functional equivalent of the master schedule we posted up yesterday (and which is also below)  this kind of formatting makes it easier to see who is playing who, where they're playing, and when,   without the need for that supersecret decoding ring. . . .

All of these teams play their games at either Durango or Green Valley, which is this year's tournament headquarters.  There are, by our count, only two teams that will get to play all of their pool play games on a "main gym" floor,  and other than a quirk of scheduling, we're not sure why   things worked out that way, but  Beach Ball Select from South Carolina and the Newark Rams from New Jersey somehow never see the inside of an auxiliary gym. . . 

When bracket play occurs, there will be another 64 teams joining these 56 teams. Those other 64 teams will consist only of first place teams from the remaining 64 brackets.  Open Bracket play will thus consist of  120 teams playing in two 12-team brackets and 6 16-team brackets.  The eight finalists from each of these brackets will then play in the quarterfinals, semifinals and the finals on Wednesday, July 19.   Of course by Wednesday morning, there will only be 32 teams left from the original 312 who started on Saturday, so things will consolidate that day at Green Valley and Durango for the Championships in each of the four "Bracket" division competitions (Open, A, B & C).

We'll have much more in the coming days, including individual team schedules for the remaining teams in the tournament.
