What we've been calling "The Crespi Summer Classic" is in actuality the 3rd Annual San Fernando Referees' Association Tournament, a 16 team tournament at Crespi HS in Encino, which had three days of pool play and then one day of semifinals and finals for the top teams in each pool (the rest of the teams got one more game but then were done).
12:00 p.m. | Grant 43 | Reseda 31 |
1:00 p.m. | Westlake 65 | Notre Dame 54 |
2:00 p.m. | Crespi 45 | Kennedy 36 |
3:00 p.m. | Harvard-Westlake 38 | Valencia 52 |
5:00 p.m. | Alemany 44 | Burroughs 42 |
6:00 p.m. | La Salle 48 | Village Christian 32 |
7:00 p.m. | Burbank 52 | Granada Hills 48 |
8:00 p.m. | Hoover 28 | North Hollywood 48 |
We didn't make it out to the games yesterday, so we can't really comment on what happened or who played well, but were kind of surprised to see that Notre Dame lost to Westlake, which has been playing very well throughout the spring, and also just picked up transfer Brandon Duplessie (6'-6" Sr. PF) from Crespi. We heard that Notre Dame was missing Cody Pearson and Mike Luderer yesterday (don't know why, but perhaps they just decided to take the day off). Grant continues to roll with Mike Charleston and DeWayne Anderson, but they too were missing several players. Harvard-Westlake in the post-Lakey era continues to struggle and they finished pool play at 1-2. Burbank played well but Ron Quarterman's team is missing Frank Reed, who injured his arm at the War on the Floor. And North Hollywood, with Gus Ruiz, Nathan Stern, Kenny Hauser, et. al, continues on their quest to repeat as the champions again in this tournament (they won it last year, and Crespi won the inaugural version in 1998). In any event, based on yesterday's results, here are the final pool standings:
Place | Pool A | W | L | Pool B | W | L | Pool C | W | L | Pool D | W | L |
1st | Crespi | 2 | 1 | Valencia | 3 | 0 | Westlake | 3 | 0 | North Hollwyood | 3 | 0 |
2nd | Kennedy | 2 | 1 | Grant | 2 | 1 | Notre Dame | 2 | 1 | Burroughs | 1 | 2 |
3rd | La Salle | 1 | 2 | Harvard-Westlake | 1 | 2 | Burbank | 1 | 2 | Alemany | 1 | 2 |
4th | Village Christian | 0 | 3 | Reseda | 0 | 3 | Granada Hills | 0 | 3 | Hoover (Burbank) | 1 | 2 |
The rest of the tournament schedule was really a function of where a team finished in pool play. The second, third and fourth place teams only get one more game and then they're done, while the four first place teams play two semifinals and then get a shot at the championship game at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Given the results, the semifinal matchups are:
4:00 p.m. Crespi v. Valencia
5:00 p.m. Westlake v. North Hollywood
6:00 p.m. Third Place Game--loser of 4:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m. games
7:30 p.m. Championship--winners of 4:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m. games
The rest of the schedule, i.e., the final games for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams from each pool took place this morning, and the last one is finishing up right now as we type this (we only have the results through the 2:00 p.m. game):
9:00 a.m. | Reseda (4A) 41, Village Christian (4B) 35 |
10:00 a.m. | Granada Hills (4C) 56, Hoover (4D) 49 |
11:00 a.m. | Burbank (3C) 47, Alemany (3D) 30 |
12:00 p.m. | Harvard Westlake (3A) 49, La Salle (3B) 31 |
1:00 p.m. | --Break-- |
