What:

adidas Double Pump West Coast All Star Camp

Where:

Cal State Dominguez Hills

1000 E. Victoria, Carson, CA

When:

Session #1:  July 7 through 10, 2000

Who:

300 top players, D-I coaches

The West Coast All-Star Camp (first session) started today, and for those who may have thought that this was going to be a "weak" camp, that there weren't enough "big" names in attendance, consider the following:

1. There are more than 700 high schools with an average of 12+ players per school in the Los Angeles/Orange/Santa Barbara/Riverside area.  Add another 100+ in the Central Valley, and another 100+ in San Diego, and just in Southern California, you're talking about more than 10,000 players.

2. Add to that the rest of the Western United States and you're probably talking about another 10,000 players.

3. Even assuming that only 10% of them have any talent at all, you're still talking about a pool of 2,000 players.

4. The West Coast All Star Camp had approximately 300 players registered as of this afternoon, drawing mostly from the SoCal region, but also getting many players from Washington, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona, not to mention a handful from other states all over the country.

5.  Between them, Nike and ABCD have less than 300 players, total.

5. ABCD only has 28 players from all of California;

6. Nike has a whopping 17 players from California.

So where are all the other good players this week?   Surely, no one can seriously assert that there are only 45 players in all of California who are good (about 40 of them from SoCal), even excellent top-level college prospects. . . And that's certainly not meant as a knock on the guys at ABCD or Nike, since they are, for the most part, all high-level, high-major recruits.   But for goodness sakes, even without Jack Martinez and Amaury Fernandez being considered as a part of the rising senior class in SoCal any longer, this is the deepest, most talented group of players we've seen in probably 20 years. . . and there are a lot more than just 40 players who are going to get recruited. . .

And if there were 45 D-I prospects conspicuously absent from the first session of the West Coast All-Stars Camp you could have fooled us.    While some of the names at this session might not be household names, just wait. . . . they will be.  We can't promise you that 60 minutes is going to follow anyone around this week, or that there's anyone present of the caliber of an Eddy Curry (heck, we hear that there isn't anyone at either camp, besides Eddy Curry who is of the same caliber as Eddy Curry), but there is a ton of talent at this camp, and the college coaches will be out in force to see it tomorrow at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

That there were many late additions to the camp rosters from schools like Dominguez, Inglewood, Fresno Washington Union, Crenshaw,  and other top programs certainly helped, and most of these guys are extremely talented, making this camp not perhaps the "best" we've seen, but certainly one worth watching.  . . . And now that the camp is going, we really can't wait to see what happens when not only those 45 guys return and most of them wind up back at either Dominguez Hills for the WCAS #2 or the Rim Rattler, but they are joined by some 40 or more other non-California players at the two camps. . . The level of talent in Los Angeles starting on Tuesday, July 11 is going to be obscene. . .

There was a significant number of names added to this camp besides those in the rosters we posted up late last night, about 40 more players in all, and we know that there are even more who have not yet been included on the list that we got late this evening, so it could be as many as 50 from what we saw during a full day of games and scrimmages.    But here's at least a partial list (we don't have team assignments for all of them, and since we just parked ourselves on Court 1 throughout the day, we haven't seen everyone play yet. . . .but sitting at a single court is a strategy we've only tried in Vegas, and since this was going to be just the first day, we thought we'd try it out here, and it was a very satisfying, and less hectic way to watch the games. . .  and it's one which is guaranteed to let us see everyone during the four solid days this camp session will run, many several times for extended periods).

We'll have some separate observations about players and some interesting recruiting news which we'll try to write tomorrow morning before we leave for the camp, but for now, here are some of the late additions:
