NorCal's College Of Notre Dame Is
Looking
For A Good Man--(Sept. 7, 2000)
While this site is called SoCalHoops for a reason, occasionally we're asked to do a favor for a friend, and in this case our friend Gerry Frietas, a former USC assistant coach under Stan Morrison who has been the head men's basketball coach at the College of Notre Dame for at least the last 8 years or so, asked us to get the word out that CND is looking for another men's basketball assistant coach. He tells us that the job doesn't pay very much, but there are certainly some perks and advantages to a coaching stint at the NAIA level, including the fact that it's a great place to start for someone looking to get some experience coaching in college, and the NAIA isn't bothered by all of those pesky NCAA rules about recruiting and such. . . .you can recruit year round, you can make all the telephone calls to players you like whenever you want, heck, you can even coach an AAU team year round if you like. And, did I forget to mention, you'll get to work with Gerry Freitas. How can you go wrong.
Seriously, the College of Notre Dame is a small, Catholic, coeducational college founded in 1851 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in San Jose and moved to Belmont, California, in 1923. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs with liberal arts, career orientation and professional development at all levels. It also offers professional art, music, and theater presentations, and their basketball program has been pretty successful at the NAIA level. In fact in the California Pacific Conference in which Notre Dame competes, the conference doesn't even have to participate in regional playoffs (like some of the other NAIA conferences do), and they have two direct entries into the NAIA National Championships. Last year the College of Notre Dame led the nation in scoring margin over their opponents, winning 21 games, and this year they return just about everyone from a team which finished third in their half of the conference (other teams in the conference include other small Catholic and non-sectarian private and public universities and colleges like Holy Names College, Dominican College, Patten College, Cal State University Maritime Academy, Simpson College, Pacific Union, California Pacific College, Menlo College, CSU Hayward, CSU Monterey Bay, and Bethany College).
Gerry wanted us to let everyone know that the job doesn't pay much, but there's also a possibility for a part-time teaching position (but that's pretty much subject to availability and qualifications of the applicants). Interested applicants should contact Coach Freitas at his office at the school at 650-508-3655, or you can contact him at home during the evenings at 408-998-1327. He did ask that applicants not use his campus e-mail, because he rarely checks his e-mail.
