Nothing going on here in California this weekend. . . everything is in Arizona for the Arizona Preps Showcase, right?  Wrong.  Ok, we know that this weekend is really still part of the open exposure weekend (it's also the beginning of Rosh Hashanah for some as well, thus precluding participation in further events this weekend by some of us, but that's a different story altogether), and yes, we realize that this is SoCalHoops, that we don't really focus on what's happening in Nevada. .  . buutttt having said that, and taking into account that there are several California-Nevada coaching and recruiting connections (e.g., Pete Padgett at UCSB, legendary Cal coach Pete Newell's family in Reno, Andre Hazel attending UNR, etc. . . ), we thought a short blurb about a very important coaches' clinic taking place this weekend on the campus of UNR wasn't entirely out of the question.  So here it is:

We're not precisely clear about all of the details, but Pete Newell's son, Greg Newell, called us last week to let us know he's staging a "Pete Newell Coaches' Clinic" this weekend at the University of Nevada-Reno.  The event will get going this Friday night, September 29, 2000 at 6:00 p.m. with the following speakers:

Pete Newell will speak about "Teaching Offensive Basketball"
Ben Braun will speak about "The Fastbreak"
Trent Johnson will speak about "Building a Program."

There will be a social hour/ cocktail party mixer with the coaches and clinicians following the first night's events. The clinic will start back up again on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. and that session will feature guest appearances and talks with:

Tom Asbury will talk about "Inside Play"
Tex Winter will detail the "Triple Post Offense"
Lynn Nance will speak about "Defensive Strategies."

There may or may not be one other "surprise" guest speaker. Pete Padgett, the coach at Reno HS, and now a coach at UCSB had been slated to be the fourth speaker, however due to his recent hiring at UCSB, it appears his schedule precludes him from attending.  The events on Saturday will also be followed again on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. by another social hour/cocktail mixer for everyone to close out the event. Substantively, all phases of the game will be covered and quite a bit of knowledge and insights will be imparted by this impressive panel of guest.

We understand that the clinic itself will be held on campus at UNReno at the Lawler Events Center which features an on site auditorium which can hold up to 300 coaches, comfortably. Lodging has been set up at The Silver Legacy, approximately 5 minutes from UNR. The Legacy is one of the finest Hotel/Casinos in Reno/No. Nevada according to Greg Newell who wrote to us with the details of the event listed above.

The event is being coordinated by the University of Reno and Greg Newell and is designed to raise money for non-profit travel teams for youth basketball in the Reno and northern Nevada region.  Mark Fox, assistant basketball coach at UNR will be in charge of making arrangements for this event, and if you are interested in attending, please contact him or you can e-mail Greg Newell for further information.
