Cal To Get Visits From SoCal
Players This Weekend--(Oct. 6, 2000)

The University of California will be getting some very big visitors this weekend and since the football team will be away at Arizona State, basketball and the rest of Berkeley will be the focus of the weekend. . . no distractions, please, from those oblong spheroid lunatics, just basketball, thank you. Recruiting USA, Cyberbears, and several other sites have all reported that Cal is set to receive visits this weekend from Jamal Sampson (6'-11" Sr. C) from Mater Dei, and Isaiah Fox (6'-8" Sr. PF) from Crossroads. According to R-USA, the visit for Jamal will be an "official", i.e., a paid visit, while Fox will be taking his second "unofficial" (meaning he's paying for it) visit. The real point is that Fox can eat whatever he wants, whereas Jamal is limited to the official NCAA-imposed per diem limit. We might suggest that Fox and his family check out Narsi, or some of the other fine establishments on the North side. . . for Jamal, well, there's Top Dog, which has consistently served the finest Kielbasa in the East Bay for more than 4 decades. . . .

Seriously though, Jamal Sampson appears to be focusing on several schools: Cal, UCLA, and St. Louis. Fox appears to be looking at Arizona, Oklahoma, and Cal.

Recruiting USA also reports that the following weekend, two other SoCal natives will visit the Cal campus (and that weekend there will be plenty of distractions because the Bears' football team will be home playing the visiting UCLA Bruins): Nick Curtis (6'-8" Sr. PF) from Oxnard, whom many believe is a lock for USF, but whom the Rockfish guys (who should know) also say is now getting involved with Washington State and SMU, will visit along with Erik Bond (6'-7" Sr. SF) from Seattle Prep.

And one last bit of speculation: Don't be surprised if UCSB tries to get involved with Nick Curtis (along with several other guys, including some JUCO big men) now that Dustin Villepigue has decided not to accept the Gauchos offer.
