Last Chance For SoCal D-I College
Coaches Luncheon Tickets--(Oct. 4, 2000)

Yesterday was a busy day for us, and hence the absence of any Daily Articles for October 3. But even though we were unable to post anything, we did hear from our friends at the LA Athletic Club about the John R. Wooden 2000-2001 SoCal College Coaches Tip-Off Luncheon, which will be held on Thursday at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Thursday, October 5 starting at 11:30 a.m.

One of the things we heard is that if you want tickets, you'll have to get them today, because they will not be selling tickets at the door.   You can order the tickets by phone, and they will take credit card orders. Cost is $25.00. Cheap at even twice the price.

There have also been a couple of additions to the program, and a few deletions.  UC Riverside will not be there this year (wait until next season when they are officially D-I);  Brad Holland and the other coaches from USD won't be there either because they are opening their new gym today down in San Diego;   Jeff Schneider of Cal Poly SLO, who wasn't there last year, is coming; and Dave Miller will do his impersonation of USC head coach Henry Bibby, which will be a lot more believable than having 7'-0" Paul Mokesky stand in for him as happened last year; and Dave Yunai, head coach at Cal State LA will speak about the state of D-II (remember, the D-II NCAA Championship will be played this year in Bakersfield, the first time it's ever been held in the West).

The Wooden Award folks sent us a press release (which they've also posted on the message board), so rather than reinvent their wheel, here it is:

Los Angeles, CA - On Thursday, October 5, 2000, The Los Angeles Athletic Club - JOHN R. WOODEN AWARD will present its annual College Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. This annual event features Southern California's NCAA Division I head basketball coaches in a panel style luncheon discussing their respective programs and prospects for the upcoming NCAA season.

Coaches Steve Lavin (UCLA), Asst. Coach David Miller (USC), Jan van Brenda Koff (Pepperdine) and Bobby Braswell (CS Northridge) will be joined by Steve Aggers (Loyola Marymount), Donny Daniels (CS Fullerton), Jeff Schneider (Cal Poly), Wayne Morgan (Long Beach State), Pat Douglass (UC Irvine), Steve Fisher (San Diego State), and Bob Williams (UC Santa Barbara). Cal State LA Coach Dave Yanai will be on-hand to discuss his program and Division II prospects. 

The event is open to the public. Ticket reservations for The Salute to Sports: Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon are available to the general public at $25.00 per person. MasterCard, Visa and American Express are welcome. For ticket reservations, the public must call in avance The Club concierge at 213-630-5255. There is a 24 hour cancellation policy. No tickets will be sold day of event.
