Laguna Beach H.S. Coach
Fleming Resigns--(Oct. 28, 2000)

We don't know any more about this than what we read in the LA Times, but today the paper carried a report that Laguna Beach boys' basketball Coach Bret Fleming had resigned for "matters of principle."  Just what those "matters" were was not specified.  He will continue to teach at the school in the PE department.

Fleming coached the Laguna Beach team to the playoffs in 9 of the last 10 years, and has an overall record fo 138-126. Laguna Beach's best finish was in 1991 when the Artists reached the semifinals of the Divisoin IV-A playoffs.

"It's probably the most difficult decision I've ever made," Fleming told the Times. "I had a group of kids that was difficult to walk away from."  Laguna Beach Principal Stu Sims told the Times that Fleming's resignation was related to "assignment changes within the structure of the physical education department" although that's not any clearer than "matters of principle."  He will reportedly seek other coaching opportunities elsewhere next season.
