Gardena Native Jermaine Harper
Commits To U of Virginia--(Oct. 5, 2000)
This is almost but not quite old news. But since most people covering Southern California basketball don't follow the progress nor the recruiting of 5th year senior prepsters who used to be from somewhere, a lot of readers might not have heard about this commitment. We're happy to report (courtesy of Recruiting USA) that former Gardena player and SoCal native, Jermaine Harper (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Blue Ridge Prep, in St. George, Virginia, has committed to the University of Virginia's head coach Pete Gillen. Harper is another of those Rockfish players whose recruitment was sort of considered by many to be a done deal for Cal, but obviously things turned out a bit differently. Harper is one of the quickest guards around, with sprinter-like speed, great defensive ability and he gets up and to the basket, even in heavy traffic with ease and tenacity. We think of him sort of like the third Craven brother: Hard-working, perhaps one of the tougher players in this year's crop of guards, not quite a proficient outside shooter, but a scorer, who will come in and be an immediate impact player.
