Phillip Johnson Recruiting
Update: Cal Poly & WSU--(Oct. 1, 2000)

philipjohnson.jpg (6619 bytes)This is our day to use Greg and Tracy as a jumping off pointsfor a bunch of recruiting stuff. . . . Pac-West Hoops confirmed this past week what we learned two weekends ago up in Fresno over breakfast with Philip Johnson (6'-11" Sr. C) from Arroyo Grande HS,  and his family.  Phillip plays with the EBO/EA Sports team at the Sweet 16 Showcase, and he was up in Fresno two weekends ago,  along with teammates Dustin Villepigue (6'-9" Sr. PF) from Simi Valley, Antonio Lawrence (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF) from Jacksonville, Florida, David Gale (6'-0" Jr. PG) from Buckley, Mike Chambers (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Will C. Wood in Vacaville, and several others from the Fresno area, mostly Washington Union guys like Keith Sconiers, Jovance Coleman, and Archie Copeland).   During that breakfast, we learned that Johnson is currently looking primarily at two schools, Cal Poly SLO and Washington State, both of which he's very interested in, and both of whom are pursuing him as a priority recruit.   He has had in-home visits from both schools,  and will visit WSU the weekend of October 21.

Our talk with Phillip and his family lasted just under an hour, and Phillip was accompanied at breakfast by his father and mother, and Phillip's girlfriend, who made the trip with the the family from Arroyo Grande.  Phillip would be an excellent player for either school, and WSU, if he is inclined to leave home to attend college, would be an excellent choice for him, and likewise, if he decides to stay local, Cal Poly SLO would be a great choice as well, and if the Mustangs can pull off the feat, they would still have one of the tallest front lines around with guys like David Henry (6'-7" So. F), Jeremiah Mayes (6'-8" Jr. F), Brandon Beeson (6'-7" Jr. F) from Irvine, Chris Bjorklund (6'-9" Jr. F), even without John Hoffart (6'-10" So. C) who left Cal Poly and transferred to UCLA.

The Mustang coaches were out in full force for all of Phillip's games two weekends ago up in Fresno. Phillip's dad, who is originally from Texas, told us that the University of Texas, UCLA,  and a lot of other schools were at one time recruiting Phillip,  but that his recruitment is primarily focused on the two schools mentioned, WSU and Cal Poly SLO.  His dad also told us he wouldn't mind buying one of those satellite dishes to be able to watch Phillip play in the Pac-10, and likewise, he also wouldn't mind making the short drive over to the campus from Arroyo Grande to watch Phillip's games.
