More USD: Toreros Get
Commitment
From Portland's Mike McGrain--(Oct. 5, 2000)
University of San Diego head coach Brad Holland has finished up the Toreros' recruiting year with his third recruit of the fall, concentrating on two guys from the Pacific Northwest, and another from Arizona, getting a commitment on Monday from Mike McGrain (6'-2" Sr. PG/SG) from Portland Jefferson HS. San Diego has also gotten commitments this fall from Nick Lewis (6'-9" Sr. PF) from Brophy HS in Phoenix and Corey Belser (6'-6" Sr. SF/SG) from Bethel HS in Spanaway, Washington. These guys will join a University of San Diego team which should return the following players next year (note: current players are shown in their current class)
Andre Laws G 6-1 JR Anchorage, AK
(East HS)
Roy Morris G 6-2 SO Chula Vista, CA (Bonita Vista HS)
Matt Delzell G 6-2 SO Dallas, TX (Dallas Jesuit HS)
Scott Boardman G 6-4 SO Portland, OR (Beaverton HS)
Tom Lippold G/F 6-6 JR Huntington Beach, CA (Mater Dei HS)
Sam Adamo G 6-4 JR Houston, TX (Col. State/Strake Jesuit)
Kevin Hanson F/C 6-10 JR Huntington Beach, CA (Oceanview HS)
Ryan Hegerty C 6-10 FR Scottsdale, AZ (Saguaro HS)
Jason Blair F 6-7 JR Phoenix, AZ (Southwest Texas State)(Redshirting this
year)
Guys who will be lost to graduation, and who will therefore not join Belser, McGrain and Lewis will be:
Nick Greene F 6-7 SR Phoenix, AZ (Mesa CC
- AZ)
Dana White G 6-0 SR Phoenix, AZ (Westview HS)
James Borrego F 6-5 SR Albuquerque, NM (Northeastern JC)
Tyler Field F/C 6-9 SR Sebastopol, CA (UC San Diego)
Cameron Rigby F 6-7 SR Melbourne, Australia (Bradley)
By our count, that's 13 active players on the roster (not including redshirt Jason Blair), and assuming all 13 are on scholarship and no one leaves, it looks like they'll have two or three spots for next year at a minimum, and will likely be looking at the class of 2002 for a big man to replace Kevin Hanson who by next year will be a senior, another wing, and possibly a point guard. And according to Clark Francis, the Toreros coaching staff, which now includes Steve Flint (previously at Valparaiso, Terry Boesel and Dave Fizdale (aka "Fiz"), "will be recruiting more in the Midwest in the future." Of course, there's lots of talent in California, so we're guessing that they'll look at the West Coast first, and SoCal in particular.
