Nike Extravaganza VI: 1/27/01--
A Brief Preview--(Oct. 19, 2000)

When someone posted an inquiry about the Nike Extravaganza, asking if anyone knew the schedule, we figured it was about 5 months too early for anyone to be asking about this event. . . . but then we thought about it for a minute and realized that even if it is early, it's never too early to be talking about an event such as this one.  So we called our good friend Steve Kaspar, who helps organize this thing and he's been doing it five years in a row, and this will be the 6th.  Here's what we know:

The Nike Extravaganza VI will be held on January 27, 2001 at the Long Beach State Pyramid,  which is where it was held last year.  Two years in a row at the same place must be some kind of record, but it's a welcome venue with great sight lines, a huge capacity, and a really well-lit floor.  The event this year will feature 9 games, up from 8 last year, and it will therefore start at 8:30 a.m.   There will also be two separate sessions, and in general, the bigger, national headliner-type teams will be playing in the evening session.

The actual game schedules have not been set in concrete, but the matchups are pretty well done for now.  Here's what we know:

Morning Session:

Servite v. Costa Mesa
St. JohnBosco v. Glendora
Santa Margarita v. Crenshaw
Fairfax v. Los Alamitos
Capo Valley v. Durango (LV)

Evening Session:

Villa Park v. Westchester
Long Beach Poly v. Ocean View
Miami Christian v. Dominguez
Mater Dei v. De La Salle

While these games could be changed around, i.e., they will be played in a different order, these are the matchups.  We'll have a lot more on this event as it nears, including previews and rosters for all of the participating teams, but for now, we'll just offer our usual statement about events such as this:    See you there.
