Floyd North, Joe See & J.S. Nash Sign
NLI's With Oregon State--(Nov. 9, 2000)

More signing news:   Our good friend from down in San Diego Ollie Goulston tipped us off with an e-mail today about the fact that Floyd North (6'-5" Sr. G) from San Diego's St. Augustine had signed his letter of intent; following that e-mail, we got another one, which included the official press release from Oregon State University, which announced all three of the signed NLI's received by Beaver Coach Ritchie McKay and his staff, which also included signed letters from Joe See (5'-11" Sr. PG) from California D-I State Champion Concord De La Salle, and from JS Nash (6'-3" Sr. G) from Moreno Valley Rancho Verde HS.

Here's the official press release from Oregon State announcing the signings, and as someone reminded us this morning on the message forum, with these signings, at least in Frank Burlison's opinion, OSU has one of the top 25 classes (No. 22 specifically) in the US this year.  Pretty impressive.

Corvallis, Ore. - California prep basketball standouts Floyd North, J.S. Nash, and Joe See have signed national letters of intent to play men's basketball at Oregon State University, it was announced Wednesday by Beaver head coach Ritchie McKay. Wednesday marked the first day of a weeklong early signing period. 

North is a 6'5" guard from St. Augustine High School in San Diego. He averaged 19 points and 7.5 rebounds as a junior, and earned all-state honors. North is rated among the top six shooting guards on the West Coast, according to one recruiting service.

"Floyd is an exceptional athlete, who will bring much needed athleticism to our perimeter," McKay said. "He is very explosive at attacking the rim, and a underrated jump shooter. Floyd will make an impact in this program immediately, especially at the defensive end." North also visited Georgia, and cancelled his official recruiting trip to Rutgers. Seton Hall, Tulane, Cincinnati, Kansas, and Kentucky also expressed interest in North. 

"Oregon State University is the place I felt most comfortable, from my visit to the whole recruiting process," North said. "Coach (Brad) Soucie and I developed a great relationship, and he impressed me with his efforts in coming to San Diego and to the various camps to see my workouts. My ability to score, my defensive skills, and my quickness are what I consider my strengths."  

Nash is a 6'3" guard who was also rated among the top six shooting guards in the region. The Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley, CA) High School standout averaged 28 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four three-point field goals per game. Nash averaged 37 points, including a 43-point outburst, in three games in last year's state playoffs. 

"J.S. is a tremendous scorer, with a shooter's mentality," McKay said. "He is not only an outstanding basketball player, he is a tremendous person. Oregon State fans are going to see a player who reminds them of Ray Blume and Mark Radford from the early 1980s. J.S. has a bright future at Oregon State and in the Pacific-10 Conference." Nash was considering schools from the Pac-10, and was receiving the most interest of late from Oregon State, USC, Washington, and Oregon. 

"I have a very high opinion of the coaching staff, and their system," Nash said of his decision. "I felt like Oregon State was a great situation for me, and I'm looking forward to next year. I think I bring the ability to shoot the ball well as one of my assets, but I'll do whatever it takes for Oregon State to be successful." 

See is a 6'0" point guard from De La Salle High School in Concord. He averaged 16.6 points and 5.5 assists in leading the Spartans to a 31-1 record and their first ever state title. See, who is one of the top rated point guards on the West Coast, hit two free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining in the championship game at the Arco Arena in Sacramento to give De La Salle a 47-46 victory over Clovis West. He was one of 48 players nationally to be selected for last summer's USA Olympic Development tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo. "Joe may be one of the best players I have ever recruited, he reminds me of former Georgia Tech standout Mark Price," McKay said. "He is a tremendous shooter, very quick, a underrated defender, and has the uncanny ability to get to the rim. He will make a huge impact in this program." 

See narrowed his choices to Oregon State, California, and Santa Clara, before making his final decision. He also received offers from Utah, USC, Nebraska, Yale, and Princeton. "I chose Oregon State because of Coach McKay and the community," See said. "The university and the city of Corvallis seem to support the team well, and that was a big factor in my decision. As far as my strengths as a player, I'm a confident shooter and I believe I see the floor well."  

The three prep players finish the early signing period for Oregon State, and projects the Beavers to the full complement of 13 scholarships for the 2001-2002 season.
