Compton Centennial's Anthony Davis
Commits To LBSU--(Nov. 7, 2000)
Recruiting USA first reported it this past Friday, 11/3/00, and obviously we've been derelict in not passing this along sooner (but then it was somewhat obscured by the events which broke concerning Dominguez late last week, and then the UCLA/Lavin/Malone nonsense which consumed a lot of time over the weekend). . . but better late than never, and we say that because this one is about a really talented, nice young man who should really be congratulated on where he's headed:
Anthony Davis (6'-5" Sr. SG)--pictured left-- who is currently attending Compton Centennial committed to Long Beach State on Saturday. Davis had just taken a trip to Louisville the previous weekend, but decided to commit just a few days before the signing period begins (it starts tomorrow, Nov. 8), to Coach Wayne Morgan's LBSU 49'ers. Davis is a strong, big-bodied guy, who started out his high school career as a freshman and sophomore seasons at South Gate, then transferred for his junior year to Cleveland in the San Fernando Valley, then played in a couple of games for Inglewood this summer before finally settling on Compton Centennial. In club ball, Anthony played for two years for the LA Rockfish and also participated in the Rockfish Spring League. At the Oakland Slam N Jam/EBO "Elite 8x2" tournament this past July, Anthony showed up on the LA Paladins roster, and he played for the Paladins there and at several other fall events. Anthony is a remarkable shooter, with an excellent outside shot, a better-than-decent defender when motivated, and he has excellent ball-handling skills and great size, and will be able to immediately step in and help the 49'er's.
Davis will join other recent LBSU commits which include Mark Bowens (6'-2" Sr. PG) from Arizona, a solid point guard prospect who also was looking at UCI, and Chris Jenkins (6'-6" Sr. SF/SG)--whom we've never seen, but about whom R-USA quoted an unidentified "top college scout in the Midwest" as saying he "could be the biggest sleeper in the country". Jenkins is reported to be an exceptional athlete who didn't participate in any travel events this summer due to an injury he suffered at the beginning of the July evaluation period.
Davis was recruited by just a handful of other schools besides Long Beach State, including Detroit, Georgia and Louisville.
