Christian High School is a private, co-ed, Christian school of about 400 students in grades 9-12. It is located in El Cajon, about 15 miles east of San Diego, and coached by Curtis Hofmeister. Coach Hofmeister is a first year head coach who spent the past eleven years assisting Randy Wright at Christian. During this time the Patriots won 3 CIF San Diego Section titles and made 5 trips to the state playoffs. Three times Christian went to the Regional Championship game, winning a berth in the State Championship game one time. Last season the team played in D-V, but this year, due to increasing enrollment, we understand that they've moved up to D-IV. At least schools like St. Anthony, Calvary Chapel Downey, Serra, Verbum Dei and the rest of D-V in the Southern Section are breathing a bit easier. With the move to D-IV, the Patriots will have to battle Horizon (San Diego preseason #3), Lincoln Prep (preseason #4), and highly regarded Bishop's, among others, for the San Diego CIF Section D-IV title.

Last year Christian finished the season with a 28-4 mark, setting a school record for wins in a season. The losses were to Division 4 state power Modesto Christian, Vista High School by one, to state ranked La Jolla Country Day, and to eventual State Champion Price Academy in the Southern California Regional finals. Ten players return are returning to compete again for the Patriots, and three new faces have been added to the mix. 6’10 Moulaye Niang is the largest newcomer, and will provide athleticism and size in the middle. Key returners include Chris Carter, who hit 121 three point buckets last year, Ben Wohlfeil, last year’s starting point guard, and defensive specialist Michael Jackson. 6’6 Justin Vanderwerff will provide size and shooting, and sophomores Jake Wohlfeil and Wai John Wai are athletic and will figure to be greatly improved with a year of varsity ball already under their belt. Jorge Cerna is a returning letterman at the guard spot. Another newcomer, 6’8 Gaspar Sanchez- Herrerra, will provide more size and rebounding for the Patriots. The football team will add more depth to Christian’s squad when their season is done, due to some quality dual sport athletes. Mike Singleton is a sophomore point guard who will add quickness and passing to the offensive mix, when his all-league football season ends. Josh Paddock and Clint Gerlek, also all leaguers on the gridiron, will return this year for the Patriots, as will Brent Dongell.
Christian begins the year as the 10th rated team in San Diego, and opens their regular season Saturday, December 2 against Rancho Buena Vista. Christian’s success will hinge greatly on the ability of returners and newcomers to blend together. . We'll be watching.
