It's not often that we venture outside the Ventura/LA/Orange/Riverside/San Bernardino area to feature a team profile and preview of a team from the San Diego Section (we've featured a few San Diego teams over the years, including St. Augustine last year and USDHS several times in prior years), and we'll be the first to admit that we don't get down to the San Diego region as much as we'd like to. But this season there are a lot of really excellent players in the region, and the San Diego area will also be host this December to what is now turning out to be one of the biggest and best tournaments taking place this year, the Torrey Pines National Championships, which has gotten even bigger and better notwithstanding the withdrawal of Nike as a sponsor. . . San Diego HS isn't playing in the TPHS tournament, but they will be appearing in several other well known tournaments, including the Vaquero Classic, a tournament which attracts teams from the Southern Section as well as just local teams.
In previewing teams in other regions, in many cases we rely on second-hand or word of mouth information when it comes to talking about the players, but that's not the case with this team, and there are several players on this squad who we've had several excellent opportunities to see over the past few years, including several who were at some of the bigger camps and tournaments this past summer. And even better, the San Diego HS team has it's own basketball website (which hasn't been updated yet for this season, but which does have a ton of information from the past two years, including some really extensive photo galleries of the players in action).
The Coach & Some History: Dennis Kane is the head coach of this Division I squad which went 23-4 last season, finishing at 10-2 in the Eastern League of the San Diego Section as the Co-Champs of the league. Kane has been the head coach for two season, compiling more than 20 wins in each; prior to his arrival, the Cavers only managed 17 wins (total) over three years. Last season, San Diego HS made it to the San Diego Section D-I semi-finals to the eventual champion, Carlsbad, and many in San Diego feel that they have the nucleus to win the section in addition to their league this year.
The Cavers' squad this year is dominated by some talented seniors, and they also feature a couple of excellent juniors and even a few sophs coming up who will provide some added depth. The Cavers are led by the senior backcourt of Frankie Calles (pictured right) and Drew Foster. Both were reserves on last years club but played some big minutes in crucial games. They also both enjoyed very good summers as well as strong Super 60 League campaigns (San Diegos spring all-star league), and Calles played a strong summer at the Double Pump West Coast All-Stars and then played with the San Diego Alley Cats team.
Foster (pictured left) is an explosive scorer who can ignite a team with his drives or outside shooting. He is very strong and an excellent defender, a guy with the quickness to guard point guards and the strength to cover bigger players. Calles came into his own this off-season and is drawing some D-I interest, but will likely wait until spring to make a decision about college. He has consistently displayed an unselfish attitude to go along with his tenacious defense, and is a quality distributor and defender.
Randy Bland (left) and Shamar Shire (right) will be the post players for the Cavers this season and they complement each other well. Bland is the Cavers top returning scorer (10.0 ppg) and can take over a game offensively, while Shire can be just as dominant defensively. Both players can step out and hit the "3" as well as score in the post effectively. Shire is probably more well known in recruiting circles, having played at the Fullcourt Press Fall Hoops Showcase the past two years in a row, and this past September, he was impressive. He's always been somewhat lanky, but appears to have gotten stronger and more aggressive on the boards and in the paint.
The key however for San Diego High School lies in their quality depth. The Cavers love to run and press, so fresh bodies are a necessity and fortunately that's where depth on the bench comes in. Seniors Bodeke Traylor (pictured right), Anthony Scott, and Nate Moore can all contribute on both ends of the floor and will battle for starting positions. Traylor and Moore both can shoot the ball with pretty good accuracy, while Scott is an explosive player around the basket as well as in transition. Rodrekus Wright should also help in the post, while Brian Black, Roberto Guzman, and Kenny Simmons will battle for time in the backcourt.
While San Diego lost 2 starters from last years Eastern League Champions, they do return 8 players who played significant roles in that championship. The Cavers depth and experience coupled with their quality talent will make them the favorites to repeat as Eastern League Champions, but their focus will be on bringing a section title back to their home that is affectionately known as the "Cave".
