CIF Southern Section Division
I-AAA,
I-AA & I-A Teams For 2000-2001--(Dec. 2, 2000)
The season is just getting started, with most teams having played only a few preseason tournament or non-league games, but this year, because of the creation of a new third subdivision within the Southern Section in Division I, the powers that be (TPTB) within the CIF Southern Seciton have decided to actually check enrollments right now (as of November 29) and issue the playoff division lists. While it won't make a real difference until February 14, when the first playoff games begin, it will be important for purposes of tracking each team through the SCIBCA polls which will be issued here and at the Southern Section's official website.
There's no "moving up" this year. Each team in the Southern Section has to be in it's own "proper" enrollment division. Thus, the teams listed below are those which will be the ones actually eligible to compete in the playoffs in their own respective divisions. Still no word yet on whether the CIF will go back to the traditional "top half of league" requirements for entry into the playoffs, or will stick with the very successful and (we think, and yes this is the "opinion" part) better 10-win rule (which really is tanatamount to a .500 season considering that the CIF only allows 20 official games during a season (the way around that 20-game limit is that it doesn't count a tournament as more than 2 games, so teams which participate, for example in 3 tournaments and play 4 games in each, only get charged for 6 games, and yet they've played 12. . . ).
Here are the new division assignments for Division I, which involve the three new subdivisions. Mostly what's happened here is that schools at the lower end of the former D-IA have been moved up, while a few have been moved down from I-AA in order to accomodate the three playoff divisions. The only conundrum in this division will be which teams get the nod for the state tournament. Each of the division champions will go, but then it's going to be tough to pick the fourth participant, and from what we hear, a committee will be doing just that. Should be interesting. . .
Oh, and in case you're interested in numbers, D-IAAA has 47, IAA has 47, and IA has 48 teams in it, for a combined total of 142 teams.
