Monday 12/18/00--(Dec. 19, 2000)

*Note--This article was actually posted December 25, since we didn't have time during the week to post these scores, but we've finally caught up, and better late than never. . .

We know that these scores and game details below are far from complete, but they're what we've managed to cobble together from what folks have sent us and from the data that's been published both in print and online from today's local papers.   We are missing some game details and we'll try to get them later tonight.  If you know the score or details of a game we've missed send it in to us either by e-mail or by posting it on the message board.

League and Non-League Games--Monday, December 18, 2000

Arrowhead League

Sherman Indian 64, Ambassador Christian 47--Brandon Giden (6'-1" Jr. F) scored 31 points and collected 18 rebounds as the visiting Dawgs (1-2, 1-5) lost to the Braves (2-0, 5-6) in an Arrowhead League game. John Palmer (5'-8" Sr. G) scored 11 points, including nine on three-pointers, and also had four assists for Ambassador Christian.  Adrian Pina scored eight of 25 points in the third quarter during a 30-5 run to give Riverside Sherman Indian a commanding lead. De Anza League

Yucca Valley 68, Big Bear 51--Dylan Budd scored 14 points, and his brother Travis added 13 points as the Yucca Valley High School boys basketball team defeated visiting Big Bear 68-51 in a De Anza League game Monday. Jordan Brower had nine points for the Trojans (0-2 in DAL, 3-3 overall), who pulled out to a 20-5 first quarter lead and never trailed. D.J. Crider and Kevin Zuidma each scored 11 points for the Bears. Crider also
had seven assists and five rebounds.

Freedom League

Masada 51, Wilson Creek 37--Jimmy Bailey (6'-1' So. G) had 18 points, five rebounds, five steals, two assists and two blocks as the visiting Eagles (1-1, 2-2) fell to the Knights (1-0, 2-3) in a Freedom League game. Senior 6-3 center Shanute Aaron had four points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks for Wilson Creek. WILSON CREEK (37) -- Bailey 18, Espitia 5, Matos 5, Powell 3, Aaron 4, Johnson 2.  MASADA (51) -- Stallworth 2, Morris 5, Kirkland 23, Baylone 0, Davis 8, Williams 8, Fairley 5. Alemany 74, Canyon 54--Evan Cline scored 31 points for Alemany (3-5) in a nonleague game at Canyon. Bloomington Christian 66, Calvary Chapel Redlands 36-- John Smith (6'-3" Sr. F)  had 18 points, 18 rebounds, two steals and two assists to help the visiting Ravens (6-0) over the Bears (6-2) in a nonleague game. Mike Martin (6'-5" Sr. F) added 18 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists for Bloomington Christian, while Aaron Rollings added 12 points. Bloomington Christian held Calvary Chapel to two points in fourth quarter as it earned a non-league victory BLOOMINGTON CHRISTIAN (66) -- Martin 18, Brown 4, Jordan 7, Smith 18, Rollings 12, Jordan 5. Notre Dame 64, Campbell Hall 45--Cody Pearson had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Michael Luderer added 16 points for the Knights (5-0), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, in a nonleague game at Notre Dame.  Notre Dame begins play Wednesday in the Mission Prep tournament at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, playing Modesto Calvary Chapel in the first round

Palm Springs 77, Yucaipa 68-- Palm Springs (3-4) hit 9-14 of it's first shots from the field, and broke a three game losing streak in a non-league game against Yucaipa Monday.  Caleb Barton scored all nine of his points in first quarter as the Indians went on a 14-3 run to gain a 21-10 at the end of the opening quarter. Yucaipa pulled to within 36-31 at the start of the third on a pair of free throws by Ian Price, who lead his team’s scoring with 22 points. Palm Springs then went on a 6-0 run and in the fourth, led by 10.Palm Springs: John Dahlin 17, Charles Harris 12, Joe Johnson 11, Donald Whitted 10, Caleb Barton 9, Donnell Berry 7, Nick Nabhan 4, Chris Kandora 2, Brandon Fenton 2.  Yucaipa: Price 22, King 15, Craig 12, Renich 8, Lewis 5, Watkins 4, Simmons 2.

Twin Pines 71,  CEDU 34 --Guard Steven Gonzalez scored 23 points, including 7 of 12 from three-point range, to lead Banning Twin Pines to its second victory of the season. Upland 78, Diamond Bar 28-- The Highlanders wasted little time asserting themselves against the Brahmas, opening a 16-point first-quarter advantage and strolling to the nonleague win. Jason Hathaway led Upland (9-1) with 15 points, including four three-pointers in the second half. Lionel Davis finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Jason Harris contributed 12 points and Sheldon Pace supplied 12 assists.  Mark Jecmen had 12 points for Diamond Bar.

Bell Jeff Tournament

Semifinal

Grant 68, Bell-Jeff 65--Gino Raney made two free throws with one second left in overtime to give the Lancers (6-1) a semifinal victory in the Bell-Jeff
tournament.  Mike Charleston led Grant with 25 points and Raney added 22. Casey Markovic had 29 points and 15 rebounds for Bell-Jeff (7-3).

9th Place Game

Verdugo Hills 56, Kennedy 55--Luis Perales scored 14 points, including a layup at the buzzer, to give the Dons (1-8) a pool-play victory in the Bell-Jeff tournament.  Danny Castro had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Verdugo Hills, which finished with a 21-7 run.  Down one point with eight seconds left, Junior guard, Danny Castro penetrated the Kennedy defense, drawing a double-team and dropped it off to Chris Perales who was left unguarded for the open layup. Verdugo Hills came back from a 15-point, fourth quarter deficit to win the ninth place consolation round semifinal game in the Bell-Jeff Boys' Basketball Tournament game 56-55. Brentwod 57, Mary Star 56--Despite 30 points from Jack Kalmeta, who shot 6-6 from the 3 point line and 15 rebounds and 8 points from Jonathan Phillips, the Stars (2-7) fell to the Brentwood Eagles.

La Canada Tournament

Second Round Pool Play

La Canada 76, Army/Navy Academy 54 -- Billy Hofman had 19 points, eight assists and eight steals for the Falcons (7-1) in a pool-play victory in the La Canada tournament.  La Canada advances to Thursday's semifinals against defending state Division III champion Bishop Montgomery.  The Spartans shot nine of 13 (69%) in the first quarter against Army/Navy, but just 18 of 47 from then on (38.3%).   The Warriors drop to 4-5. One player the Warriors had no answer for was Billy Hofman. The sophomore finished with 19 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals.  Like usual, La Canada's offensive output was well spread-out. Jordan Ballard had 13 points, Phil Swenson had nine and Mark Moore chipped in with eight. Swenson also had seven rebounds for the Spartans. The Warriors were led by Jorge Osuna's 18 points and Joe Markham's 15. Garden Grove 68, Apple Valley 56-- Steve Sosa and Andy Scimeca both scored 17 points to lead the Argonauts (5-2) over Apple Valley in a pool-play game. Scimeca had five steals, and Paul Guzman finished with six points and 10 rebounds for Garden Grove.
