The Double Pump Hoop Challenge for 2001 will again take place at Long Beach City College and will feature 6 great games, including some top matchups, like Anaheim Canyon, which just knocked off Long Beach Poly, the top ranked team in I-AAA, against the No. 2 team in the country, Mater Dei, and this one looks like it will be a better matchup than anyone had previously imagined. There's also Upland, a three-time tournament champion this past December taking on the Torrey Pines National Prep Championship winner Corona Centennial. Bishop Montgomery, which didn't win the Whataburger Classic in Texas, but finished third, will take on a surprisingly good Artesia team (surprising because they have some excellent talent and are playing very well even considering all the recent turmoil and upheaval in the program). Washington Union, always a tough Central Section division III contender which has Vonn Webb back at the helm will take on an ever-tough Eisenhower team which surprised more than a few people at the recent Rim Rattler Holiday Hoops Invitational. And there are even two league games, with Lynwood taking on Compton and LB Jordan taking on LB Poly. Six great games, and a full day of basketball featuring some of the top players on the West Coast. What more can you ask for? Here's the schedule we received yesterday. There may be some changes, but for now this is what the event will look like:

It's going to be at Long Beach City College. For those who have never been there before, it's just about 10 minutes further south down the 405 than the usual Pump venue of CSUDH, and LBCC has a great map with directions on it. The games are at the Liberal Arts Campus in the gym which is located just off E. Carson.

There are several ways to get there, but the easiest and quickest is to take the 405 either north or south, and exit at Lakewood Blvd. (north). Proceed north on Lakewood past the Long Beach airport (which will be on your left), past the golf course (which will be on your right). You can either proceed directly to Carson Street and then turn right and go about two blocks; turn right just past the tennis courts (if you pass the pedestrian bridge you've gone too far). You'll see the gym. . . Alternatively, instead of going all the way to Carson, you can turn right at Douglas (I think that's what it's called) just at the south corner of where the Douglas plant is located, and go about a block. Before you hit the football stadium, at the first intersection, make a left and proceed directly to the gym. You can't miss it.

Oh, and if you're planning on flying in from anywhere to see this event (or the ensuing event--the Dream Classic on Monday at LMU) and you can get a flight into the Long Beach airport instead of LAX, take it, because the LB airport is literally just about 1 minute from the gym. On the other hand, LMU is right next to LAX so you'll be able to get out of town quicker when the events are finished. . . yes, on second thought, fly into LAX. . .
