Mater Dei 73, Mayfair 48--

The buzz going around the LMU gym before this game was that it was going to be payback for some injudicious comments made by Mayfair coach Dave Breig to a reporter that "Mayfair is going to win". . . comments that we're certain Mater Dei players had been told about before the game or read about. . . Not that Mater Dei came out with any kind of real passion . . but with their depth and surfeit of talent, they easily dominated Mayfair and controlled the game frm start to finish in such a way that, coming on the heels of the Inglewood v. Redondo rout, this one was never in doubt. By halftime, with the score 37-22, most people had seen enough, and started heading for the exits, and by the fourth quarter, most of the crowd of 3,000 + who had been on hand for the start had left. . . about 1500 Mayfair and Mater Dei faithful did stick it out until the bitter end, which was, indeed bitter for Mayfair, a team with a lot to prove this year, including that it is a CIF contender this season. . . It's just that compared to Mater Dei on this night, with this team, there just wasn't much  Mayfair could do right.  It wasn't the turnovers (Mayfair had just 7 while Mater Dei had 9), but it was some terrible shooting from some otherwise good shooters, and Mayfair's duo of Childress and Draughn were asked to do way too much themselves.  Matt McCraw only shot 2-9 from the field, went 0-4 from three; Chris Childress was too busy riding Jamal Sampson like a large pony, and he only took three shots in the game, making only one.   Brian Thomas went 0-2 in 11 minutes, and Brian McFadden went 0-3 in 14 minutes.   Even Draughn struggeled shooting 6-14 and Childress too didn't have it going down as he shot 9-17.

Actually there's not much to say about this game except that Mater Dei (18-2) won and Mayfair (13-3) lost. While Josh Childress and Edwin Draughan both had some spectacular plays and decent scoring (Draughn finished with 17 points and Childress scored a game-high 20),  Mater Dei was just too deep. . .  The Monarchs were so deep that they pulled this one off with the incredibly talented sophomore duo of Trevante Nelson and Wesley Washington playing a combined 4 minutes at the end of the game when the score was so far out of reach for Mayfair it wasn't funny. . . . that's how deep Mater Dei is.   The Monarchs had four guys scoring in double figures. The Monsoons really had no answer for Jamal Sampson (6'-11" Sr. C) who dominated the inside game with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  In the first quarter alone, Jamal, who had to sit on Saturday because of a double-technical foul call in the Santa Margarita game on Friday, scored 8 points and grabbed half his rebounds, and he didn't play in the fourth quarter at all.  UCLA-bound Cedric Bozeman quietly racked up 18 points and dished out 6 assists (at least that's the number the Mater Dei stat guys had. . . we counted two more than they did).   Harrison Schaen and Mike Strawberry both had 10 points apiece.

We wish this had been a closer game, but it was still a great way to end what is clearly one of the best events in SoCal. . . . now it's on to the Nike Extravaganza. . . oh yeah, there are a few other "extravaganza" thingees coming up too besides the Nike deal, including next weekend's "MLK Holiday Classic" at Cal State LA (that one will have Moreno Valley v. Elsinor, Ontario v. JW North, Rialto v. Pasadena Marshall, Alta Loma v. Perris, Canyon Springs v. Dorsey, Upland v. Ocean View, and San Bernardino Pacific v. Price), as well as the Feb. 3 "SoCal Basketball Classic" sponsored by Lynwood & LB Poly, which will feature Ontario v. Morningside, Artesia v. Santa Margarita, Lynwood v. Compton (we knew that game was going to happen somewhere, sometime if not at the Hoop Challenge on Saturday), LB Poly v. Corona Centennial, and Mater Dei v. Los Alamitos. . .

Anyway, here's the complete box score from Monday's nightcap:
