Here's the short summary: Larry Monroe and Kyle
Bechler scored 19 and 17 points, respectively, for the Tartans in a victory over the
Friars. Glendora held the Friars to 28.9 percent shooting.
And the even shorter summary: 8:30 a.m. was a little bit early, even for us after all of the Friday night games, and we just decided to pass on this game.
And now for a slightly longer version: Richard Gonzalez, writing for the PrepSports report published by the Los Angeles Newspaper Group (Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Pasadena Star News, Whiiter Daily News, etc) wrote a pretty good account of the game (the full article can be found at this link, at least for the next day or so). Here are the key excerpts:
"In capping what co-coach Mike Le Duc termed as the team's "best week of practices this season," the Tartans earned their second victory in less than 14 hours, topping Servite 56-32 in the Saturday morning's opening game of Nike Extravaganza VI at the Pyramid. The latter half of the "double-dip" feat was made more impressive considering Glendora was without two starters for the morning game: Lauren Smith was taking the SAT; Michael Mehanna was in Tampa Bay for Super Bowl XXXV. "With two guys gone, we felt this was going to be a case of needing people to step up," said Tartans standout Kyle Bechler, who worked his way into a shooting groove to finish with 17 points. "Everyone did that, and that's been then case with the team lately."
Even down two starters, Glendora's superior execution in adjusting to the 'open-air' environment of the Pyramid proved to be the difference. Not discouraged by the typical lack of shooting success high schoolers initially face while playing in spacious surroundings, Bechler and teammate Larry Monroe (19 points to lead 19-3 Glendora) shook off early shooting woes to lead the way. Bechler, who missed his first five shots, nailed three 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Tartans turned a 12-5 lead into a 28-15 halftime advantage.
Monroe, who missed five consecutive attempts in one two-minute stretch of the first half, scored a dozen by the break, when the Tartans were in complete control.
Equally important, the Tartans flashed their trademark tough defense in limiting the Friars to just one offensive rebound in the half, denying any Servite starters much chance to find their rhythm. The Friars (8-14) shot just 29 percent from the field for the game, compared to Glendora's 39 percent, partly attributed to LeDuc digging deep into his bench by midway through the third quarter.
