Santa Margarita 71, Crenshaw 61

Another Division I v. Division II matchup, and another game we couldn't see personally because we were over in Avalon, but Carlos Arias of the Orange County Register had a great account of Santa Margarita's win over LA Crenshaw (which we've edited slightly--the original is available here): 

"Santa Margarita wasn't looking for a moral victory in its first basketball game against Crenshaw, a perennial boys basketball powerhouse from Los Angeles.  The Eagles were looking to make a statement. Santa Margarita, ranked No. 2 in Orange County, got its point across Saturday, beating the Cougars from start to finish en route to a 71-61 victory in the featured game of the afternoon session of the sixth annual Nike Extravaganza at The Pyramid at Long Beach State. "Our whole theme this week was we wanted to make a statement and take a stand," Eagles coach Jerry DeBusk said. 

"The Eagles (19-2) did it by getting off to a quick start, shooting 56 percent from the field in the first half, and attacking the basket. "It was a big statement game for us," said junior forward Lenny Collins, who led Santa Margarita with 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

"The only time Crenshaw (19-5) led was when Jamaal Walls made two free throws for the Cougars for a 2-0 lead with 6:41 left in the opening quarter. The Eagles answered with a 13-2 run, capped by a Collins three-point basket that gave Santa Margarita a 13-4 lead. Travis Smith hit a three-pointer just before the first quarter ended to give the Eagles an 18-8 advantage. Collins had two more three-pointers during an Eagles surge in the first 3 minutes, 55 seconds of the second quarter that increased Santa Margarita's lead to 30-14.

"But Crenshaw didn't go quietly, rallying in the final 2:50 of the half. Crenshaw's Terrence Jones came off the bench and scored six of his 12 points in the final 96 seconds of the half to make it 34-26 Santa Margarita's shooting percentage dipped to 36.7 percent in the second half. And Cougars point guard Marcus Williams, who was held to two points in the first half, scored 12 points in the second half. Crenshaw outscored the Eagles, 10-2, to close out the third quarter and cut the Eagles lead to 46-43 on a steal and a layup by M' Jumbe Williams just before the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter. Two free throws by Jones in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter made it a one-point game.

"Collins came back to score off an offensive rebound and Eagles center Adam Tancredi added a three-point play and two free throws to help Santa Margarita push the lead back to eight points. Crenshaw never threatened the rest of the way.
