Kalmeta finished with 34 points and five rebounds.  Adrian Navarro had 19 points and six rebounds for Mary Star. St. Anthony dropped to 0-2 in league. Adrian Navarro scored a season-high 19 as the Stars defeated the visiting Saints.

Verbum Dei 57, St. Monica 50-- We got a report on this one from a friend at the game:  "Great game, too bad somebody had to lose. . .  Richard Cheney led all scorers with 18 points, including two three pointers to lead Verbum Dei past St. Monica's in Camino Real Play. Sean Cole led St. Monica scorers with 14 and 11 rebounds. St. Monica established a strong inside presence early, but foul trouble for both teams kept Marcus Shelby for St. Monica's and Deon Marcus and Martin Starr for Verbum Dei on the bench for much of the 1st half. St. Monica took a two point lead into the fourth quarter, but key three pointers by Michael Lay and Richard Cheney put Verbum Dei up by two 52-50 with 20 seconds to go. St. Monica got a great look at the basket, but a Hampton Nunley three pointer fell short and Verbum Dei got the home win. A pivotal call in the 2nd quarter hurt St. Monica's, as Robert Rakestraw was ejected on a foul from behind on a break-away layup. As St. Monica's best defender, steal leader and #2 assist leader, Rakestraw's presence, leadership and energy was missed late in the game by the Mariners. Verbum Dei 14 11 11 19--55;  St. Monica 9 16 13 12--50.  St. Monica dropped to 12-6, 1-1, while Verbum Dei improved to 12-4, 2-0 with the win.

Channel League

Santa Barbara 66, Dos Pueblos 61-- Dommanic Ingerson scored 18 points, including two big 3-pointers in the third period, to lead four Dons in double figures. Santa Barbara improved to 11-7 overall and 2-0 in league while Dos Pueblos dropped to 11-4 and 0-1.  6-foot-6 senior center Tucker Waterman had 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Point guard Dante DeRose scored 13 points on 4-for-4 shooting and had five assists. He made several strong drives to the basket, finishing with either a basket or a pass inside to Waterman or Trey Putnam.  Dos Pueblos, however, stayed with the Dons step-for-step through most of three quarters. The Dons built a 22-15 lead on a basket by Ingerson midway into the second quarter but Dos Pueblos rallied on baskets by Kenny Sherman and Damon Jenkins and a 3-pointer by Omar Cowan to close to 24-23. The game stayed within a basket, with the lead changing hands several times, throughout the next 12 minutes.  A driving basket at the buzzer by Kerry Russell put Santa Barbara ahead 49-47 going into the final period.  But Ingerson opened the final quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers from beyond NBA range to open up a 55-49 lead and the Chargers could never quite recover.  The talented Ingerson, who signed this fall with Michigan, was coming off an erratic effort against San Marcos in which he scored only four points and was frequently benched by Lavender. Against the Chargers, he appeared to produce a more even effort.  Ingerson fouled out with Santa Barbara leading 62-54 and 3:12 to play. Steve Graybill led the Chargers with 15 points, including four 3-pointers, but he and Jenkins were unable to connect on a four straight bombs in the closing minutes as Dos Pueblos tried to close the gap.  Two free throws by DeRose with 55 seconds left gave Santa Barbara a 64-57 lead and pretty much sealed Dos Pueblos' fate.  Kenny Sherman had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Cowan added 11 points. Jenkins had six points and seven assists.  The Chargers struggled at the free-throw line, hitting only nine of 18 tries.  SANTA BARBARA -- Putnam 15, Russell 4, Ingerson 18, Bogan 2, DeRose 13, Duke 2, Waterman 12. Del Rey League

St. Paul 58, Serra 56--Well, this was a game that I actually braved the elements, driving down the 5 in the rain to Santa Fe Springs, and while it was not an overwhelming game, it was a lot closer than it should have been.   Junior guard Dontay Holloway, who scored 13 points, made two free throws in the closing seconds to seal the game for St. Paul (11-8, 1-0) as Serra's diminutive point guard Eugene Jeter (5'-9" Jr. PG) missed a shot at the buzzer and Serra (11-7, 1-1) lost.  St. Paul  shot only 53 percent from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter but it was enough to win. Serra had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, battling from a 53-44 deficit with 4:34 to play to close within the final margin on Austin Jackson's follow basket with 38.3 seconds left.  Serra regained possession with 4.6 seconds remaining when an aggressive defense forced sophomore guard Tigran Grigorian into a turnover.  Eugene Jeter dribbled the length of the court into the lane and threw up a 5-footer that bounced off the rim as time ran out.  St. Paul improved to 11-8 overall. Serra slipped to 11-8 and 1-1.  St. Paul led most of the game, but committing some key turnovers gave Serra a shot to come back in. St. Paul led by five, 14-9, with two minutes left in the opening quarter, then took a 16-14 advantage into the second period after Serra's Eric McNeal nailed a 3-point basket at the buzzer. The Swordsmen were up by five again (26-21) with 3:41 left in the second quarter, but turnovers on three consecutive possessions allowed Serra to close the gap to 30-29 at halftime. The Cavaliers took a momentary lead at the start of the third quarter when Randal Odums connected on a 16-foot from the side, but three baskets from James Sammarin and a pair of 3-pointers from Omar Cepedia helped St. Paul to a 43-38 lead with one quarter to play. Wade led Serra with game highs of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Samarin, a 6'-2" 280 lb sophomore and Dontay Holloway, a junior, led St. Paul with 13 points each and seven rebounds.
