Clovis West's Hernandez Ties
Central
Section Assist Record--(Feb. 1, 2001)
According to the Fresno Bee, Clovis West High boys' basketball point guard Chris Hernandez (6'-2" Sr. PG) who has signed a Letter of Intent with the Stanford Cardinal for next season has moved to the top of another Central Section list. With 13 assists in two games last week, the Stanford-bound point guard tied the section record for career assists. In three-plus seasons, Hernandez has 722 assists -- tying former Washington standout DeShawn Stevenson, according to section historian Bob Barnett. According to the story by Fresno Bee sportswriters Lisa Burnett and Terry Betterton, "Being a fourth-year player has helped Hernandez climb to the top of the chart, Golden Eagles coach Vance Walberg says. But, Walberg adds, "He's definitely a stud." With three games this week, Hernandez could put some distance between himself and Stevenson, an NBA rookie with the Utah Jazz. Clovis West plays Clovis on Wednesday and Buchanan on Friday, then hosts Jesuit (Carmichael) on Saturday.
The Bee story also noted that the Hustlin' Eagles, who are ranked as the No.1 team in the Central Section of CIF, No.3 by Cal Hi Sports in the State of California, and No.17 in the nation by Fox Sports, have won 48 straight games against Central Section opponents. The last section team to beat Clovis West, which has never lost a Tri-River Athletic Conference game, was Washington Union, 83-73, on Jan.30, 1999 (and that was with DeShawn Stevenson).
